You have wayy to much time on your hands... but I will say what I think it could be.

1) Different driving style on long trips (even though you say it is the same)
2) oil is thicker when cold which make the motor work a little harder
3) car may be running richer when cold which could use more fuel
4) sustained highway driving rather than stop and go at the end and beginning of your short commute.

Just a few things that could affect it. Sounds average to me.
