What kind of backlash - you should have some rotational movement on the rotor (10-15deg) holding the drive shaft firm.
Something you could try - suck/blow on the vac/boost port. Not sure if you can register enough huff - but theoretically it should rotate the rotor. Theer is a diaphragm connected to the port which has a linkage arm to the adv/retard mechnism from memory. It should be able to move freely.
