The type number of the engine is stamped into the case on the passenger's side by the fan, 930/xx). A 1984 ROW engine is type number 930/66, USA 1986-> is type number 930/68.

No this is not necessarily a bad thing, especially if the changes were made when car was federalized. Very easy to remove the smog stuff any time if you wish.
