When you get close to max dimensions fitment will depend on the tire brand.
By the numbers a 265/35-18 will be 0.4" wider and 0.3" taller than a 255/35-18 (which is the size I run with the 315/30-18 rears). This doesn't sound like much but 1/3" is huge when you are at the limit of fitment. Suspension settings become critical.
You really need to allow some wiggle room for potholes and lock-to-lock steering. The 255/30-18 315/30-18 combo I use are Pirelli P-Zero's; Pirelli's run small so they fit well with no issues of rubbing using street suspension settings. The 255/40-17 315/35-17 TDK's I run do not fit perfectly and rub on occasion. This is because the manufacturer (BFG) runs on the large side and these 315 tires are 3/4" wider than the 315 Pirelli's.
