The scavenger pump is a positive displacement gear rotor pump and pulls a good vacuum. You were probably sucking some air but if the fitting was on the pump, even loosely, it was pulling oil from the turbo sump. The turbo smoking is most likely a coincidental problem and it may be the oil just getting past the turbine seals or some residual oil in the cold side that has worked its way into the intake system. You can pull the intercooler and look inside for an oil slick on the inside walls.
