Just an assumption on my part. if they were going to go to the trouble of welding on the extension why not add the plug so it could be used? In fact why go to the extra trouble of welding and filling the hole? I believe you if you've seen them that way but makes no sense to me.....I'll look for them from now on....Perhaps they were done that way at customer request based on aesthetics or even done after purchase?

I base most of my data on the '87-'89 M505 cars and I know it's risky extrapolating back to the prior years since things seemed to be a lot more fluid before '87.
