I base most of my data on the '87-'89 M505 cars and I know it's risky extrapolating back to the prior years since things seemed to be a lot more fluid before '87.
Kilo, those were my thoughts exactly. The only answer I could come up with is aesthetics.

I looked at several which had the extension, was looking while car was on lift, then noticed the hole in the rocker was covered. And was kind like WTF? Hmm, now that I think about it, I've had it both ways as well!
