The distributor should not be attached to the intercooler as it will see boost spikes there.
OEM heat exchangers are thick steel and will mask overtemp issues. You don't say if headers or OEM is being used. Headers tend to glow easy as they are thinner wall.
If your engine is running well and performance is good the muffler must not be plugged.
The heat event must be occuring only at sustained speed which indicates off timing or lean AFR during off boost events. Check your vac hoses again then adjust the cruise AFR to 13.5 and see what happens.
