your idle should start at 1200 then go down to 900 , 950 , I had the same problem ,now it's fixed, The thermo switch is vacuum not electric , in 1984 your distributor should have two vacuum nipples , how you have them hooked up will change your idle on cold and warm start, and one of those hoses goes to the thermo switch, if you can take some pic's and a diagram of your vacuum hoses I can get you Idling right,
