The gap is between the heater box and the exhaust header pipes. So long as the exhaust header pipes are not cracked, that gap is not a real big deal.

The cockpit heat comes from those boxes which encase the header pipes. If the header pipes are cracked or otherwise perforated inside the heater boxes, it will put engine exhaust fumes directly into the cockpit when you turn the heat on.
