I remember the first time I ever saw one of those. It was a black 300sl with red leather interior at the finger lakes car show at Emerson Park in Auburn, NY around 1975. the inline 6 cylinder engine was gorgeous with the real ling intake runners of the mechanical fuel injection.
The owner was a nice guy and I remember him saying he bought it used for $10,000.
That was before the value of them went crazy...

Later on I learned they have a tube frame chassis which is pretty rare for a street car.
Women didn't like them too much because the gull wing door sills were high and they had to lift their legs way up to get in or out of the car, and most women wore skirts back then.
If you were in one and it flipped over on it's roof in an accidenst you were stuck in the car. I think thats why they stopped making them from a safty standpoint.
