Read my above post. Decent engine management systems all have gear dependant boost/timing etc controls. Which means that when driver changes gear, preprogrammed boost level, advance etc will be applied.
Gear is detected as a function of rpm vs road speed (non-driven wheel).
I have done this personally on several cars.
