1.8 with carb bogs, coughs, backfires

My friend's 1.8 has a single holley set-up. Last summer we rebuilt the carb with great results. The car ran well afterwards and then sat over the winter months. We started it the other day to find it again runs like crap. Step on throttle and get little to no response at first. Then there is a lot of vibration and an occasional backfire. I changed the points. (old pair didn't look too bad) no luck! Pulled the plugs and found lots of black carbon that was easily removed with a bronze wire brush. Ran a bit better, but still not right. Checked the timing--seemed fine. Seems like too much gas, but why? Thanks in advance for your input. Pete
