Salvage title would be the deal-breaker for me. No matter whether the theft story is true, there's very likely no reliable way to confirm that. Even if such confirmation is available to you, and even if your plan is long-term ownership, the "Salvage" stigma will follow the car forever. There's a reason the term "Branded" is frequently used in conjunction with these cars. Speaking only for myself; two cars that appear to be equal in pretty much every important way ... except that one's a salvage title vehicle and the other's not, I'd expect the salvage car to be many, many thousands of dollars less. I'd take a clean title car that needs a complete top-end over a salvage title car with a fresh one.
