There was a point when these cars were not skyrocketing in value. They were used German hot-rods, not investment instruments, and modifying one was no more exotic or devaluing than modifying a M3. Read it again. It's not like this build happened only in the last 12 months.

$115k? Easy to spend that over the course of 13 years going through all of a car's systems -- engine, brakes, suspension -- sometimes more than once, plus body & paint, wheels & tires...

Does it make the owner happy? Obviously yes.
Has he expressed any notion of selling it? No.

I don't see what all the negativity is about.
