Something to consider is what you plan to be doing? If it is racing either on track vintage racing, serious auto-x or time trialing then at sometime something in the drive train will fail. When I was racing my 914-6 we decided to make the weakest part of the drive train the CV joints and used modified (available still) type one CV joints. Sure enough about every other year one would fail, usually the inner right side and the replacement takes about an hour of the whole assembly. After the weekend we would then do a transmission check to look for loose metal, etc and never did break a tranny after we started this.
