Do not cut the torsion tube!
It's structural and the backbone of the car.

The best conversions I've seen have used a g50 with a shortened bell housing and input shaft. It's an expensive proposition. Personally I would keep the 4 speed. You can always change the gearing. I currently have an 88 930 4speed and an 89 930 with a g50/50.
I re-geared the 4 speed with a taller first gear and it's great. The g50 is an improvement but likely not worth the time $$'s and effort to convert.
