If too much is taken off it won't slip, cutting the FW has no effect on the spring pressure because the PP is bolted to the FW. But it won't release correctly because the distance between the FW and the TOB has increased by what was taken off so the TOB won't push the fingers as far as before the FW was cut. It's a big problem with hydraulic clutches because a hydraulic has no adjustment so you have to shim the FW the same as what was taken off. With the adjustment available on a mechanical clutch it usually isn't a problem but I'd still check the FW thickness and compare to spec.
