87 930, 35k, <1K Miles per year. Blue smoke

Need advice on an oil burning issue. Car is low miles, driven infrequently - sits for months. Blue smoke persists after warm up. Performance is otherwise superior. Pls advise on causes.

Check your oil level on the stick warm and running, you don't want it overfull when warm. I started filling mine right about to the add mark(cold) because of a similar experience. There is plenty of oil in the tank.

Is it possible to change the valve seals with the engine in the car, or just better to pull it?

check oil level first.

DRIVE IT!!!!

put some miles on it and see how it is.

valve guide seals usually smoke when you let off the gas. the closed throttle plate causes the engine to suck oil in past the seals.
valve guides don't go bad sitting.

you could have some oil getting past the rings. again, drive it.

May even be oil accumulated in exhaust system. A good long run would/should clear that. As T77911S says, then see if it trails smoke on trailing throttle. It should give a burst of smoke when back on the gas, if guide seals.
If you had to replace, MUUUCH easier with engine out. I doubt you would save any time by not pulling the engine. May well take a lot longer with engine in.

My thoughts are the same as T77: drive it hard, aka italian tune-up....having first confirmed basic engine health (compression test, new, spark plugs are inexpensive), ignition function, that oil isn't gasoline-saturated, etc. John
