Guidance on short shift kit(s).

Getting ready to upgrade to a short shift kit for the '84 Turbo and wanted to hear from the forum what their experience was.

I'm leaning towards WEVO, but wanted to hear what those who've made the upgrade/switch thought.

Thanks.

Its not the most popular here but I have a Weltmeister and it works well. One nice thing about it is it fits under a nice leather boot and doesn't interfere with the handbrake or anything else.

WEVO shifter + coupler
Worth the price

+1 Wevo. I've been using their shifters in various 911's since they came out. I use the Classic with a Momo knob. Just added a Sparco leather boot that screws into the knob for a nice clean look.

+1 on the Wevo and coupler.
I got the black wevo with the knob full of drilled out holes. Love it.

Save your synchros and leave it stock.

Patina,

What do you mean “save your synchros”?

Does using a short-shift kit like WEVO wear or harm them more than the stock configuration? Please share what you know; I’m all ears.

Thanks.

One more point of reference in favor of the wevo. I love mine and even got the extra springs so I could add a little extra tension.

How about the JWest Eng/Rennshift unit? Comes as a total replacement for your factory shifter including housing. Looks very nice, but I have never seen a direct comparison/review to the Wevo unit.

I have about 4-5 years of using my Wevo plus the PSJ coupling, it is great!

I do not consider a "short shift kit" an upgrade.
It just swaps ease of effort for speed, and if you are shifting faster it usually is harder on the syncos.
I try to shift the same speed regardless of the pivot points of the gear lever.
Two of my car have short shift kits from the 80's and I will eventually change them back when I find some one "upgrading" their car to a short shift system.

I've thought about a Wevo shifter for a while now. My 87 is sometimes hard to get into first. My 2nd gear synchro is bad and I have to shift slowly and deliberately to not grind. I thought the Wevo may help my first gear problem but doubtful it would help my 2nd gear problem. The 2nd gear shift is not a real problem because I'm not into speed shifting anyway. It is a slight problem I can live with until I need an engine out service. Any thoughts about this?

I don’t think many of us are drag racing the Honda Civic next to us at stop lights and looking for the fastest gear change. I assume getting a newer “shift assembly” will provide the positive, crisp engagement most are attempting to achieve.

The Wevo isn't going to fix a trans/synchro issue.
I like the Wevo for the precise positive shifts, vs the bowl in the mush from the stock shifter. I never thought of it as a speed shifter. I also like the fact you can change the side to side spring tension. We had the stiffer springs in the race car and softer springs in the street car.
Not sure what the "save the synchros" mentioned above was referring to. We had a '84 915 trans in our '73 street/track car for 4 years, then moved into it into the VW Crewcab for another 9 years. Never had any shifting issues.

What Gumba said.
A new shifter won't solve problems internal to the transmission. Fix that sooner than later -- the longer it goes on, the more it unnecessarily wears out the slider and dog rings, too, doubling the transmission repair costs.

Another one for the WEVO and coupler. Totally changed the experience. Best mod done thus far.

s5uewf 06-21-2019 04:46 AM

Yes, I am not sure my wevo is actually a short shift kit. It is more of a precision shift kit, as others have implied. Shifting is still very Porsche like as opposed to a Camaro or something. It is definitely one of the best upgrades I have made to improve shifting ease of use and precision, along with the coupler and lining it all up properly.
