Need Tire Advice
Hi guys;
I have RUF wheels 17' 9 & 10 wide with BFG GForce T/A 245/40 and 275/40. The front tires are worn out and need to be replaced but rears are still very good (6k miles). GForce T/A are discontinued so I cannot just get new fronts to match. My only choices are to get all four new tires (I like Conti Extremecontact Sport; is it a good choice?) or just buy new fronts now and drive like that for a while until the rears become used up or I will feel the handling is unacceptable. Then I will get new Conti rears and all is good. I hate to throw out rear tires in such good shape. I know that mismatching tires front to rear is not the best practice but if I like the result will it be stupid and dangerous? Please help with an advice. |

I've done that before--mismatched fronts and rears. I tried to at least get tires in the same general categories, at least. But I figure we've already got staggered tires front and rear, so the car is never going to be "all-even" at all 4 corners. Just keep that in mind when driving in spirited fashion.

My $0.02? A lot depends on the car spec, where/how you drive, conditions you intend to drive in/might get caught out by etc.
I've taken the car out in the AM on a bright, beautiful day only to end up driving a 3DLZ-equipped car back on greasy country lanes through freezing slush while it was actively snowing/getting dark - all while sporting Kumho Hi-Perf summer rubber. They were fresh - so less drama than you might expect (if you drive like there's eggs on the pedals). But that was still a little tense... For high-perf rubber, age/hardening is a significant factor. Over the years, I noticed that all my sets of summer tires got progressively worse until they were really greasy/sliding about/pushing everywhere in cold-ish (40 or less)/damp conditions - we call that "fall" here - after 3 years. Which nicely happened to coincide with "put the WinterContacts on" and I'd just get a new set of matched summer rubber in the spring. A quick Google shows folks asking "what happened to GForce T/A" in early 2015. If those tires are 4 years old, I'd regard them as boat bumpers, regardless of mileage. If you intend to drive in cold or wet conditions or might get caught in them. Dry/hot climate, not so much I guess. I find I'm happier if the back isn't loose, though. Personally, I'd replace rubber in sets on the 911 or a motorcycle. I've really liked all of Kumho Ecsta, Direzza Z1 Star Spec and my current summer fave, Falkan RT615K+. Unfortunately for you widebody guys, I don't think a single one of those was ever offered in 275 or wider rear fitment (I run 225/45 & 255/40 on my SC-body with Rufs). Main thing stopping me doing the work to fit my 10J Speedlines to the rear - tire selection. It's a vicious cycle - as fewer folks buy that size, the number of available options will only get smaller over time.... I don't think you can go far wrong with Continentals on a 911 though. I loved the WinterContacts; they drove like regular hi-perf tires that just kept working in adverse conditions. Much nicer than Blizzaks - those wear like iron or they'd already be history...
