930, how easy to change just 1st gear synchro?
Will be mating motor back to trans soon...
If this is relatively easy, would like to diy... If a huge to do, probably won’t... Thoughts? |
depend how DIY you are, capable of remove and reinstalling the engine and trans yourself, then I think you should be able to do the synchro.

I did mine years ago, but not too difficult. Changing syncro teeth on the gears is the biggest issue. There is a thread by Infraredcalvin that also references another thread about 930 transmission overhaul. If you are just taking off first gear, you will not have totally disassemble the gear clusters.

It’s much more involved than the 914 1st gear. If you go in, you might as well do 3rd while you’re at it... then again you might as well get all of them... BTDT

for the amount of labor involved in disassembling the tranny just replace all the synchros. especially 1st and second. they see the most wear. you are goin got have to fully disassemble the tranny to do this job.
watch the video posted above......its great. |
Hardest part is locking the gears to spin the nut off the gear stack. And then you need a puller for the end gear.
Are you familiar with 911/930 transmissions and how they operate internally? There are a few 901 and 915 tutorials out there for a guide. The gear stack has to come out and separate from the middle case. Then the gears have to be removed from the shafts. Then the gears disassembled to remove the syncro ring. Also check the brake bands. Might as well address the slider and dog teeth while its apart. I usually see 2nd and 3rd with most wear. |
