Scary 930

Hi guys ,

I’ve been driving my bone stock 89 930 since 2008 but was never happy w/ it’s performance . I don’t know what was the fuss all about , w/ a monicker as the “ widow maker” . It was fast in the long straight but it’s not as special as my entry level same era Ferrari . And I’ve been reluctant to drive it because it keeps stalling / stranded because of fuel issues .
I followed the advice of our fellow forum members and did the dual fuse modification for the fuel pumps and now I know what’s the fuss is all about . It’s quite a scary car because of the power delivery , when the turbo goes into full boost !

years ago, before I got my first 911, read an article where a guy who had driven in an IROC commented how he hated racing 911s.

same comment as above, if you get into a corner too fast the only option is get back on the gas and drive like a mad man.

I’ve had a couple of instances on track where my higher brain had to scream loudly to overcome my primal brains instincts. I recall them both clearly. First time I was well into a brake zone slide and my brain was screaming get back on the gas! I was fortunate there was enough room in the corner to save it. The next time was a high speed corner, I never lifted and got a lesson in the 911 slide. I kept thinking if this ends bad at least I’ll go down with my foot in it.

Years of dirt bike riding helped me fight the normal urge to lift. We use to live by the saying “give it gas to save your ass”. It’s made for some great saves and spectacular crashes. About 90/10 from what I recall.

that's how I learned to drive my 930
but I wanted to learn its limits.

brake, turn and immediately back on the gas to keep the back end from coming around.


I have also described flooring a 930 in first gear as "violent" to people that have never driven one. not something I normally do BTW.

I recently had a conversation with a guy who is into old corvettes. during the discussion I commented about the most violent car I had ever ridden in. a '72 Baldwin corvette, all alum L88 454 modified to over 600hp.

looking forward to seeing how violent my 930 will be when done.

It really sucked calvin and Im afraid to used it for long drives because of the melting fuel pump fuse or Melted or overheated chinese red fuel pump relays and lost of power , fuel starvation during high speed run . Even when I was able acquire used German made fuel pump relays they turned very hot due to high resistance .

For me, this one @2600lbs : Not that bad with the right tune, big sticky tires and staying alert but not in first gear ( 60 on up )and on a good warm clean road.

There is nothing remotely scary about a stock 930 other than stepping out in traffic and not going anywhere for 4 seconds. Modified? Now that's a different story...

I remember doing a pre-delivery inspection on a brand new one in about '85. Carefully babied it out of the dealership, got onto a clear stretch of our little test track then floored it. My first reaction was, "this thing's not very...FFFAAAASTTT!" as the turbo spooled up. Good times. ;-)

Do not agree! Wife and I were in the market for an early 355 spider for several years, but did not pull the trigger based on the simple fact we did not have close to the same wow factor as our '87 turbo cab with G50. A few years ago $70. k would have bought a decent 355 and in my opinion the 930 is a much better value.

Side note: I found an Alfa spider to satisfy my itch for an Italian sporting ride
