930 Transmission Slop

Gents,

I have a 1972 911T with a 930 transmission and I feel like it might potentially have some issues, but wanted to run it by the experts since I'm admittedly a novice.

First, I feel that there is significant "slop" in the transmission. There is quite a bit of play in general, but It is oftentimes difficult to find the 1st when sitting at idle in neutral. Now, that could be normal as my experience with manual gearboxes extend only to modern Corvettes and Vipers, and I'm aware there has been a fair amount of technological advancement in the 35+ years of development time between them. Is that typical or something I need to look into?

The other issue I have is that under heavy acceleration, if I have even a slight amount of aft pressure on the stick when the car is in first it can slip out of gear without my foot on the clutch. It doesn't happen at all if I don't have my hand on the shifter.

Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated.

Check all the guides, and coupler between the back seats...

Also, how does one use such a tall geared transmission in an early car?

1st gear is good to 60mph in the 930.

That slop sounds like it is the bushing at the end of the shifter where it mates to the transmission. When in neutral the sifter should be relatively firm and held in position. If it is sloppy and can find any gear by pushing it straight up or down then that is likely the issue. Granted, I have a G50 box. Guessing this will be the similar to the 4-speed.

It should never be hard to find first. Trouble getting into first could be clutch related, but if it’s sloppy trying to select it, definitely shift linkage related in some way.

How was the conversion done? Does it have a 930 shift rod?

Shouldn’t be popping out of gear easily, although resting your hand on the shifter wears things out much quicker... try to break the habit. Besides, rowing through the gears on full boost should keep your hands plenty busy on the wheel.
