87 930 odometer quit

The main and trip odometers on my Porsche have quit. I'm not sure, but I think they were operating last fall when I put it away for the winter. The speedometer works fine.

I'm pretty handy, but hate working under dashes. Is there maybe a simple solution? I have not looked under there yet, is it self explanatory how to remove the gauge?

Thanks

Probably a gear in the odometer has teeth missing or broken.. common issue. I've bought the new gear.. but its been sitting in a box for 5 years :]

The gears are cheap plastic.
Gauge has to come apart. Do a search and you’ll find out how to fix it. Or remove and send out to north Hollywood for repair

Removal of the gauge is simple, just pull it straight out (it's press-fit into the dash, held in place by the rubber around it). My odo is dead too, just haven't gotten around to doing surgery. I seem to recall a YouTube video or two on the subject if you choose to do it yourself vs. sending it in.

To remove, in my 930 I carefully used small flat-tipped screwdrivers to pry around the odometer's gasket edge to wiggle it out, trying not to damage or mar the leather dash. Took a while, but got it out successfully. Like Mark notes above, it's just press-fitted into the dash. If you can't get the odo out, try an adjacent instrument, and then press the odo from.behind to pop it out.

In my 964, this technique didn't work, so I used a long thin metal rod through the frunk to push the instrument out "from behind."

Both times I walked into NoHo Speedo for them to repair the odometer. They did it on the spot once, and the other time had me come back a couple days later.

Odometergears.com
Buy the gear from above, they sell gears that are made from graphite infused plastic that doesn’t require lubricant. They also supply very detailed instructions.
The problem with Porsche speedo is that the needle has to be removed in order to be able to replace the gear. This is also why so many Porsche speedos are not calibrated correctly, I believe.

Thanks a lot. Interestingly enough, my speedometer isn't quite right either. I use the GPS speed on the radar detector.

My 930 speedo was 9mph optimistic when I purchased it! I put on 245R5016 tires on rears at my mechanic’s suggestion, also because of availability issue, the speedo is still 4-5mph optimistic.
My 993 speedo is 5mph pessimistic, when I bought the car about a year ago I found two speeding tickets the previous owner had collected in the glove box!

Just did this gear swap to fix my odometer. Slowly twist the needle off the thin motor shaft to remove it so you can remove the gauge face using the 2 black screws. Don't try to do the gear swap by unscrewing the screws under the gauge face (which is suggested in one of the threads). You're likely to bend the needle and/or gauge face.

I didn't want to risk screwing it up so I sent it to NORTH HOLLYWOOD SPEEDOMETER. $165 and a week later it was done.
