Correct procedure for installing distributor

Hello all
I was hoping to get a little clarification on installing my distributor. It appears that I can install it in two positions and still meet the top dead center mark with the router hitting the #1 mark ... ... So my question is should I align it with the distributor tooth that is
more advanced or more retarded? Picture is offset to the side bu
so you can see the position of the star under the rotor but the rotor is aligned with the mark.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1586264048.jpg

Or should all three of the be aligned the star the rotor and the mark http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1586264544.jpg

I would go with picture #2. I think when the distributor gear meshes with the crankshaft gear it will force it to this location anyway. The next tooth on either side will probably force the rotor to be visually out of position.

Best of luck,

Rahl

I assume the dist is seated all the way down in both pics

I think you will have to just do trial and error.
I want to say mine probably does the same thing and either way I put my dist in I am at or near the limit of adjustment for timing.
maybe one way or the other may make it easier to get to the dist.
just try both ways and see which way works best.

here is a tip.
if you pay attention you don't have to set the engine back up to Z1 TDC when you pull the dist.
if the rotor is lined up to #4, then put it back in lined up or close to it.
if you don't feel comfortable with this then line Z1 back up
