cam sensor
hi guys
i need to install the cam sensor for my motec M48 - with new 900CC i need to do sequential fuel injection and not 3 groups since the engine is from 964 and its on 911 - 1977 i have blocked the power steering cam with Albert from going super fast . the one with the honeywell sensor. did anyone succeed to install one of this ? did i need to add something to camshaft it self since there is only a hole to thread ? did same one have any picture after he made it ? i have send E-Mails to Albert but he is not answering me for quite a while so i need Help ..... big Help thank you in advance |
Looking at the pictures on his web site, you would need install a cap screw in one of the two bolt holes in the end of the cam shaft. You need to select the cam bolt hole that will indicate the closest to when cylinder#1 is coming up on TDC. Hopefully that will be 120* to 30* BTDC. I would place the engine at TDC for cylinder# 1 and see which bolt hole will work best in relation to where the sensor will be. The cam bolt head must pass the sensor head prior to the cylinder coming up on TDC. Remember to determine which direction the cam rotates when you rotate the engine. Also, the sensor mounting plate can be rotated(installed) in three different locations to accommodate locating the sensor head in relationship to the bolt head in the cam.

As far as the sensor is concerned, they're pretty simple. Either a Hall Effect (3 wire: power, ground, signal), or a mag sensor (2 wire: ground and signal, doesn't matter which is wired where). Wire appropriately, choose the correct type in ECU Manager. For a magnetic sensor, look at the signals in the built in oscilloscope/capture in ECU manager when cranking, choose the noise floor (~50% of peak) correctly to reject unwanted noise.. The output of a magnetic sensor will vary wildly depending on gap/speed. It'll probably start fine with the Motec default, but getting it spot-on correct can make it sync up faster - mine was reading 2.2V peak-to-peak, and the noise floor was letting garbage count when cranking. Setting it to ignore anything below 0.5V (1.1V peak) worked a lot better for me; 2 revolutions and it fires. I think the default was 0.25V or something like that - probably to let it work for guys with a slightly bigger installed air gap. |
Polarity matters with magnetic (VR) sensor!!! If polarity is wrong then pulse edge from which ECU triggers is also wrong (floats with RPM, the higher the RPM the more it is retarded). And some ECU's don't even detect signal from VR sensor that is connected with reversed polarity.
