air cooled 911 turbo vs gt3 or gt4

looking for performance differences between the 2 era cars...
I realize we are talking almost apples and oranges....
however, from what I have read the cost to buy is about the same ($85-120k...)
this is generally speaking... I understand condition, miles, etc...

Can any one post that may of had an air cooled turbo and went to a more modern water pumper porsche 911...what did you change to...glad made change or regret it...?
any and all input welcome...
thx, Bob

There is no comparison between a stock 930 and any GT3 from any generation. The 930 has a similar performance to a 996 base carrera (I have driven both).

The GT cars are leagues ahead in all respects, and it's a recent market anomaly that the air cooled cars have leaped up to ridiculous price points. In 2014 you could get into a very nice 930 for <$30K. It's bizzare to think that a 40 year old car has appreciated so much in less than a decade. Here in Canada the few for sale are now advertised between $140K and $400K.

I sold an '82 930 to 'move up to' a 997 GT3, missed the 930, then two years later another '82 930 became available locally so I bought it. Having both didn't work for me so I sold the GT3. I'm happy with the decision.

Your preference for 'either/or' if you can't have both is entirely personal taste. I try and manage my own wrenching (which thanks to this forum is do-able) and am less intimidated approaching the 930 with a mitt full of tools. For a guy in his mid 60s the 930 feels like a better fit for the demographic. I enjoy the car's many quirks. It's a timeless, rolling art form.

The GT3 for me was a license suspension waiting to happen...had to be driven way too aggressively to get a buzz. A wonderful performance/handling machine that is well suited to track days. If you are super disciplined enjoy it on the highways.

A great first world dilemma to have; do I prefer a 930 or a GT3? Let us know what you decide.

Cheers!

That pretty much sums it up! I own a 930 and have been fortunate enough to spend a considerable amount of time behind the wheel of several generations of GT3s, Twin turbos etc.. and as stated above you have to get aggressive with the GT3 to get the buzz, however it will deliver! The way its sounds, handles and darts keep you aggressive often. You're not going to get much wrenching in on it yourself (though it doesn't need much) unless you're properly set-up with diagnostic equip, and preferably a lift given lack of accessibility to most things.

The 930 on the other hand is just old-skool kool and delivers its buzz in a different way, especially if its set-up to your liking or should I say, set-up properly. It just kinda depends on what type of overall experience you're looking for from the vehicle. And yes, it would be nice to have both!

Good luck!

You need to drive waay to fast to reach the edge of control in those modern porches, let alone a gt3. The 930 is scary at reasonable speeds.

Friends with faster cars (current m3, gt3, gt350 mustang) drive my 930 and cant believe how fast it feels.

Its not fast, it easily understeers, snap oversteers, big turbo lag, no power steering, long 4 speed, rough riding torsion bars, but the car is charming as all getout.

I have both now. 79 930 and 07 GT3RS.

The 930 took $30K (or more) in mods to make it drive the way I want it too. AC upgrade was a must to give it summertime use where I live.
The car is pure fun 100% of the time. And the people that want to talk about the 930 are more like me.

The 07GT is out of the box perfect. But ditto to the prior comments. You find yourself being a giant D-Bag because everything feels slow.
The attention it brings comes from a different crowd. The kind of people that ask what you do for a living. It's about money instead of cars to most of them.

If I got rid of one it would be the GT3RS

I have a 930 and a 996 GT2.

930 mid 13's in the quarter, mostly stock.

GT2 w/Cobb tune, GT2RS intercoolers and Fabspeed exhaust, best of 10.82@133mph.

Ah, the age-old question.

I been fortunate to spend decent amount of WOT time in GT3RS, GT3, GT2, 996tt etc over the years. Are those all supremely (!!!) more capable comfortable and practical machines than my 930?

CERTAINLY

Are they as engaging / full of character? Not so much. Hard to quantify but the folks ^above^ here have done a great job - esp agree w/ the types of folks each car attracts. Spot-on assessment. Love the "dewsh" bit about trying to exploit a GT3RS on the street. Right!??? Exploiting 8k+ on the street takes... commitment. Addictive, sure. More than a bit of lunatic frenzy... you betchya.

Worthy of note is... I've seen / heard this quandary posed a nummmmber of times over the past few years by many folks. _Each_and_every_single_one_ I've heard has switched from 930 to newer "GT_" car... eventually returning to a 930. Yup.

I think that speaks volumes.

To each their own tho, each car scratches a different itch - and we all itch differently 8 )

Thank you all for your info here...Its greatly appreciated...!!

Not having owned either & a HUGE fan of both era cars, I easily get caught up in all the greatness of both and appreciate all of your inputs as I could very easily see myself going down the road of a modern GT3 etc and than still yearning for the old school air kuhled 930...

I would guess since I am in my 60's now that the air kuhled would best suit me... I do work on all of these cars but owning is different then just test driving for short stints & both are packed tite come service or repair time so thats a coin toss on which is "easier" to work on...

Provided I put in the electric a/c kit available from england now or the car have sound factory or it has upgraded a/c.. timmy/mr harness likes this a/c as do many others who are running it now...

So, the tilt is to the old... but still... maybe I just need to start looking and see what I find first for a fair deal and make the decision then...

We all know we can sell what ever we try if after a bit we need a change...))

Thanks again all... Bob

The Hyundai Elantra N 4 cylinder economy sedan will run away from a stock 930 at a track day.

Alot has happened in 40 years, but old cars are still cooler.

I guess also what I like a lot & did not include it initial post so as to not sound all over the place in my question, and is WAY MOST $$ practical is the m491 body coupe as its the wide body & w/o the more difficult & time consuming required to work on an air kuhled turbo...I also did not add that I don't need to be the fastest one out there...btdt...
Try to fine one of those tho... tough...

LOL - I've ridden passenger on a track day in my own car with an instructor who races professionally.

I commented to someone that he looked pretty bored when I was driving - and that he could very probably lap me while driving a Ford econobox without trying very hard.

They replied "yeh, while texting his girlfriend"....
