Air filter replacement

WTH? So, I’ve done a lot of work on my 930 but never personally replaced the air filter. My stock air filter housing is secured by two studs with nuts doubled up (oh yeah!). When I go to unscrew said nuts the entire stud turns. Not sure if this the way it’s supposed to be or if the housing should lift of the secured studs once the fasteners on top are removed. How do I get this thing off to replace the filter? I can’t see how one would replace in situ. Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying Spring weather.

I think I figured it out. PET shows it as a bolt (a $4.75 bolt no less). Looks like $9.50 was saved sometime ago.

Yup the whole bolt screws out, and yes those are the wrong ones. Interesting what folks will use not to spend a few dollars..lol

You typically don’t need to remove the whole air box to replace the air filter. Just remove the clips on the right side, pull the cover off, remove the filter and replace either the new one.

This was how I viewed the process but as I unclipped, I couldn’t see how there would be enough clearance to get the cover off and filter out so I went the route of exploring removing of the entire housing which seemed silly.

And those two screws can be a bear to line up with the holes and get them started!

Despite many patient iterations, I've not been able to change the filter without removing the 'mail-box', which requires moving the a/c pump out of the way. Huge ordeal for a simple filter change, but it seems that accessing just about anything requires removal of the intercooler, a/c pump, and air filter box. You will get good at doing it quickly.

Unless your set on keeping everything original I would suggest a change to a cone filter or something similar to end the frustration. After pulling my intercooler a dozen times to get to various things I decided change was good. I haven't had my intercooler off since. Yes, I like the original look better but its just not worth the hassle.

With cone filter:
