New to the 930

Hey all,

I've posted here from time to time, mostly about the first Turbo Carrera (R5 chassis) that got disassembled by Gunnar and then "re-imagined" over in Europe.

I've been playing with air-cooled 911's for about 12 years now and recently finished an almost 5 year long RSR tribute build in 2019. Sold my G50 coupe earlier this year. Well, this past weekend I pulled the trigger and acquired an '87 930 in Grand Prix white. It was part of a 3-way deal for 3 cars with another Pelican about 90 minutes from me.

The car's motor has been modified and the PO estimates it around 375 hp. I can believe it because this thing sounds wicked and snaps me back HARD when I stay on the boost. Here's a partial list of the equipment:

K27-7200 turbo
M&K Headers & Hooligan turbo exhaust
Factory LSD (220 on the options sticker)
17" Lindsey 9's and 11's Fuchs
Turbokraft EFI Injector block kit
Ported intake
964 cam
RS door cards
Analog A/F ratio gauage

Motor was rebuilt about 40k miles ago. The interior is pretty stripped. No AC, heat or rear seats. Just the driver's seat. I'll add a passenger seat, but that will be about it.

Anyway, here are a few pics of it in the garage (next to the RSR car). It has been an absolute hoot to drive, though the R888R Proxes are deadly in the wet. Had to pull off the highway during my 90-ish mile drive home as I couldn't dodge all the thunderstorms and didn't want to spin out on the interstate.

Hope to learn more from posting here more frequently. Thanks in advance for the replies and help.

Nice, looks like mine but you have nicer wheels and more HP. Have fun.

Always happy to welcome another Pelican to the boost-pipe!
I’ll start… if you have TK’s brilliant EFI, you need way more turbo than the 7200.

Welcome to the circus!

Yeah, if its on EFI do you know what? Typically you can run a much more modern turbo on EFI converted cars.

LOL, I don't think I am really ready for more boost, but good to know.

Forgot to mention it has an Andial Racing intercooler too.
Ordered the new Blaupunkt Bremen DAT to replace an ugly Sony head unit.

Any suggestions on new tires that don't want to kill me in the rain? Don;t want to change the stance one bit, but the fronts are a little odd in size - but still way better than finding wide 15' rubber The fronts are 235/40 r17 and rears are 315/35 r17. Pretty sure I want more of a GT tire than the current Proxes R888's.

Here's a couple more pics my buddy shot last night.

Congrats. I think these cars are so much fun to drive. A real hairy-chested, analog car.

Welcome! And sweet 930! More pictures and details pleeeezzz!
For tires in running continental extreme contacts sports. Really dig these tires 235s on front with 275 out back. Others I've talked to that run them really like them as well.. well priced too.

I have the same tire sizes as you. I would keep the 235 up front, if you go any larger you may have rubbing issues. Also, I find the 235 easy to steer.

I went with Nitto NT05 but it’s basically an auto cross tire. It really grips well, but definitely not good for the rain.

I am using the NT05 as well. I'm very happy with it. It doesn't rain in California, so wet weather ability is not high on my list of priorities. But the few times I've driven in it, I've never noticed it to be any worse than any other high performance summer tire.

Well, pulled the trigger on some tires. Thought about the Proxes RA1's, but really didn't want to worry about storage and cold weather issues. Plus, no 315/35R17's.

So, I bought the Nitto NT555 G2's for the rear and the Yokohama Advan Fleva for the front. I know, not the same tire, but they are similar Summer UHP tires with not that dissimilar tread designs. Tire tech guy thinks they will be fine together and based on experience I am inclined to agree. The rear Nittos have beefier tread blocks for more grip than the Yokes, but I think I may prefer that. Will post back with experiences.

I'm running Nitto NT555 G2's all around on my '79--245/45-17 and 315/35-17. Both with 25.67" diameter. I'm wondering why you went with something different in the front?

TDW, I think I know where your 930 came from. I'm relieved it didn't fall into the hands of a flipper which is where I suspected it went. You appear to be a hard core enthusiast and no doubt will enjoy the turbo infected ride.

That's what it has now and it just feels right to me. Not going to disturb the set-up. Q: DO you like the NT556G2's?

Yeah, much to wife's consternation. Honestly, she is actually fairly supportive, though when the idea of this purchase first came up we definitely had to "discuss" it.

Nice trade and your 930 has perfect stance! I also have NT555 G2 all around. I've driven it on light rain and they were fine.

Got the new rubber on the car today. Pulled off the Lindsey's and ran them over to a tire shop nearby. Never been there before, but they have like 6 dudes and 6 tire mounting and balancing machines running simultaneously. No appointments, cash-only and in and out in 20 minutes. I don't like leaving the car on the jack or stands. Instead, I have a set of 16" Cup I's with old Conti rubber on them. Those are the perfect shop wheels. They are light, clear turbo brakes and easy to store. If you change wheels and tires out like me, get your self a set.
