Play in 930 shifter?
Hi! So my reverse stopped going in so I started the shift linkage bushings replacement. There is a lot of play in all the bushings so that will help.
I noticed there is play inside the shifter itself. The shift lever carrier is quite tight but the shifter lever moves a bit on the pin. Is this normal? Here is a link to the video of the play on YouTube. Thanks!! David https://youtube.com/shorts/DOk55l8G-XA?feature=share The play is at the pin circled on this picture ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hi David,
If I am looking at your video correctly I think you are correct. That movement does not look correct. There is a “C “ cilp on the large pin that the shift lever rotates on and usually a washer under the “C” lip. The washer may have worn out or a thicker washer may help take up the slack. Best of luck, Rahl

For info, it has the Weltmeister short shifter but that uses most all original parts except the lever itself and the base plate spacer.

Also that lower part of the shift lever with the ball end is hardened to a very high Rc hardness. If the hole is deformed or the pin worn that could be part of the problem but they should both be hard enough to have very little wear.

The ball end looks fine. I’ll replace with a new bushing and see whether the play is gone. It’s where the pin goes through the lever that worries me. I’ll have it apart shortly and see. Maybe I just need a new pin in there.

Surfaces look pretty nice and no visible wear…. Maybe some play as it is a Weltmeister short shift kit…

OK, So how many washers did you take off of the shaft with the "C" clip? To firm up the shift lever you should probably have two washers and the "C" clip, one washer on each side of the shift lever and then the "C" clip to hold it all together. If there is any slop in there you will feel it when you get the resistance of the transmission linkage.

Oh! Only one came out. That’s an easy fix. I currently have one by the c-clip only. I’ll see if I can add another. Thanks!

Play in 930 shifter?
Well! All done. Put back together with new bushings (ball cup, rod slider, coupler). What a difference! It has never been so “precise” before!
The old bushings look like they had had it. So I suspect that whoever drove the car at the dealer forced the shifter to get in reverse and crushed the bush. In their defence, it was very perished and brittle! Thanks again for the help folks!! ![]() ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

![]() So this roll pin doesn't need to be removed? I'm in the middle of the same project. I made a mistake of trying to clean up the old grease with some WD40 and now it squeaks. So I figure I need to disassemble and put some fresh grease on that pin. Is that axle grease? Definitely doesn't look like, nor feel like white lithium.

No, I only removed the screw one and wiggled the flexible portion out. I never removed the carrier from in there. I suppose that to remove the carrier completely you will need to pull the pin.

How many washers came out of yours? Only one came out of mine. There was not enough room to add a second but with new grease and all new bushings it feels awesome now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

![]() just one washer. Definitely some space left, but not enough for another washer. No wiggle.

very nice! definitely a massive improvement over the old bushings! Do you have the original shifter or short shift kit?

![]() ![]() ![]() Rear linkage bushings were disintegrated. Amazing that I did have 1-4. I used a vice and some sockets to press the pin out. I didn’t like the hammer and drift method I saw in several videos. Oh, stock shifter, not short shift

Yep! I suppose there is a LOT more allowance for sloppy shifter in a 930 than a 911 being a 4-speed (except for the last few years). I think having a 5-speed I would have had to replace them much sooner.
I did the drift method and it was easy. Cheers David Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

My coupling started to fail and I lost reverse as well. The plastic bushings disintegrated as well. In the end I rebuilt the coupling and then switched over to stromski coupling. Works awesome! Oh, and I do have a short shift kit in my 930.

Yep. Makes such a difference!
Now about the shift knobs! I have broken two of the original Porsche ones!! Is it me or did they switch to some cheap plastic? They also come wrapped in a Scott paper towel and a Porsche box. I guess I’m going aftermarket now as I’m not buying another of these! Anyone else has broken new ones putting them in? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
