non factory air box options show me the goods

Hello all
i was hoping to see some air filter options . The factory box just makes everything so non accessible not to mention next to impossible to get those screws aligned .I am looking for something that actually looks like it belongs and doesn't look like a 70s aftermarket chrome Chevy air filter. so if you made or bought something that fits the bill please share some pictures .
Thanks in advance
Regards Ned

I like my K&N cone filter. It cleans up the engine bay, fits perfectly, can be bought on Amazon
And has no chrome. Just have to put a V notch at the base rubber to clear the adjustable screw.
There’s an old thread here all about aftermarket filters.

Evolution Motorsports used to do an ABS 930 air box that took a big old cone filter. They swore they spent a lot of time on it, and that not only was there more top end, but that the mid-range saw torque improvements. Imagine Auto had dyno runs agreeing, and used to sell them.

They were pretty popular in the naughties; I had one (sold it years ago with the rest of my CIS stuff); there certainly was a lot more room in the engine bay, as well as substantial weight saving.. Can't speak to any power improvements, as I changed turbo, intercooler and headers at the same time.

Here's someone else's for sale ad to give you an idea what they looked like FS: EVOMS CAI for 930 Turbo

Good luck finding one; although EvoMS are still in business, they don't list any 930 bits 15+ years on...

I’d like to see dyno proof substantiating power gains. Brian has done testing that showed no power gains with aftermarket filters over stock. The weight savings and cleaning up of the engine bay are real though. And definitely worth it imo.

I really got tired of pulling the intercooler off every time I wanted to make an adjustment and early on it was a common thing. I've had several ideas but the cone filter solution is the best I've found. Since no one else has posted a picture, here's mine.

Very good point there PK. The sounds of a free flowing and free breathing 930 are definitely intoxicating.
The filter in Steve’s photo is the same one I have. No complaints.

Fabspeed

I have had this on my 82 for a long time. Originally a Fabspeed filter but replaced it with a K&N after a long search for the right filter #. Oil catch can from Summit Racing.

^^^^ there is a tab on the right side of the intake.
I made a bracket to attach the catch can to the bracket. makes it look real nice.

Installed a catch can and ran it for a while

but since it was always empty I removed it and installed a filter instead.

We recently had an early 930 come in with one of those on and it was crumbling apart. We replaced it with the K&N everyone else posted. Looks great.

There was virtually *no* time spent developing it -- it was a knock-off of a factory airbox modified out of necessity to fit the the Electromotive crank-fired coils on the intake above cylinders 5-6.

On Bob Holcomb's (MODE) dyno, that plastic airbox resulted in a loss of power.

Like the Fabspeed air filters, the rotomolded plastic gets brittle over time and can crack and get ingested by the airflow meter.

Yes, it made accessing other parts of the engine easier, but that's about the only positive feature.

Yep - it was your posting that made me post the pic. I had to make a bracket - just used the existing mount points.
As for usefulness - as others have posted - I have never found more than a dribble in it.
But I have to have it for the track - rules.
Alan

I probably need to sell this if anyone's interested. Will look in the attic and see if I can find it.
