CDI+ over 3500rpm

Hi everyone, I'm new on this forum, writing from France.
I recently bought a brand new CDI+ 6-pin for my 1986 930 Turbo. It's plug and play and the engine strated immediately. but, on the test drive, it went well until ... I heard weird motor noises starting with ca. 3500rpm. Any clue on that?
Best, Laurent

Laurent, you will need to provide more details about your car. If you can provide a video of the noise at 3500rpm that would help immensely. Also a picture of you 930 is helpful to get more attention.

All right, thanks. Will do, but in a couple of weeks since I’ll be travelling until then.

Answer received from Classic Retrofit : coil is probably too old to match the electrical requirements of a double spark within 400 ms …
I will swap coils, try again, and let you know!

I finally had the opportunity to modify the CDI+ setup, as advised by Jonny from Classic Retrofit. I then had to (i) change the coil et (ii) reset the spark interval from 400ms to 500ms, which I did within minutes. The engine started normally et revved to 4000rpm without a problem.
During the test drive, Where I went up to 6500 rpm, I had the feeling I changed the turbo ! So now it works 100% and the improvement is huge …

Did you first use the original Porsche Bosch coil? What kind did you swap to?

I will also be installing the CDI+ in my 1986 Porsche 930 Turbo.

Best Regards

Tobias

Hi Tobias,
I first left the original and old Bosch coil in place (because I was lazy) and that new CDI+ was probably too much for it. I sent an e-mail to Classic Retrofit to get their advise on the recommended coil to a CDI+. Their reply was the one from Partsklassic (https://www.************.com/p-1586-cdi-ignition-coil-by-************.aspx) which seems to represent the best choice, which is what I did.
If you do that, make sure the bracket is adapted: the one which is delivered with the coil is a tiny bit too high and touches the intercooler. I had to swap it with the older bracket so that it works.
Other than that, this is just fine

Thanks for this writeup! I've got one I need to install this spring and good to know about the potential coil issues!
