HELP: Can you identify the part in the picture?

Hello,

I brought my 89 930 to S. Korea about 4 months ago and still not able to register the car due to smog issue. Currently Lamda is about 1.4 and that is way over the limit. The Lamda is one of item Korean official checks to register a car. After that, they will check the 'real' smog. The car was able to pass CA Smog without any issue for the last 8 years.

Currently, we are trying to do some tweak to just pass the test. To lower the lamba, I don't know what to do. Any kind of suggestion will be helpful.

Also would you help me to identify the two item in the pictures and if possible the functionality. Thanks.

First picture is the air injection spider that distributes air into the individual cylinders for emissions.
Second picture is air injection tube to cat. converter to pump air in to the cat. for cold start pre heating.

Thank you very much, Richard. The mechanic want to block these tube to limit air flow to reduce the Lamda. Thanks again.

At idle the diverter valve is supposed to be blocking air from the air pump to the cylinders and allowing it to the cat. Ask your mechanic about the diverter valves. Also, there are turbo workshop manuals on line to introduce you to the details of your new car. Enjoy!

Thank you very much. I am a retired engineer also and always wanted to disassemble my car and check out each part to learn about their function. Now I've got a time and after the registration test, I want to do the that. Thanks again.

The air injection system is actually an emissions control system. I *believe* that it is designed to cause the catalytic converter to heat up, although I'm not 100% on that.

I'm not sure defeating it will lower your emissions, although maybe it will help you pass some specific part in the test.

Thank you for your comments. You were right. The lamda is lowered, but now CO is higher thus it didn’t passed the test. Still working on it. Thanks again.

Thank all for your comments and helps. Finally, passed the test. I will sleep better today because I will have some whiskey for the celebration. Thanks again.

Nice! How many 930's are on the road in Korea?

I am not sure but I heard 3 including mine. Somehow they like 964 or 993 more than 930 for air cooled Porsche choice. About 200 air cooled Porsches are in S Korea.
