Shift Knob Removal

Can anyone help with shift knob removal? I have tried to rotate it to remove it but to no avail. How do they come off?

Scott

It slides off. There is a compression sleeve inside the knob and sometimes it's tough to break free. Some have used a piece of wood as a drift and tapped the bottom of the knob until it slides off.

What year is your car?

If it's '86 and older it has a crush sleeve that is held on by pressure:

If it's '87-'89 then there is a screw under the cap that holds it on:

I had the same problem and then lost motivation to take it off, so I left it alone. I will try again after being armed with this info

I know this is an old thread, but can anyone confirm if wcc's image is correct? I have an '87, and a newly gifted 917-inspired shift knob I'd like to swap into my car. Just lefty-loosey the OEM knob and it should come off? And I can remove the knob without having to remove the leather shifter boot?

I took a look at this thread, too: https://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/596430-shifter-inspection-removal-instructions.html
Two guys (Paul and oilonly) both had '87s, but one knob was threaded on, and the other was a pry-the-cap-off-and-remove-a-screw type. Any way to tell which is which before I destroy anything?

My 86 has the screw on type with a locknut. Which allows for easy orientation.

Now does anyone know how to get the e brake handle off? PO put on an aluminum one for obvious horsepower gains but I want to replace it with OEM black.

Some of those aftermarket brake handles have an allen key set screw underneath if not it should just pull off

What size is the shift knob bolt? Can't find it on PP.

Scratch that - M8 X 1.25 x 40 Hex head bolt did the trick.

OK, so I answered my own question from above. Different years seem to have different methods of attaching the OEM shift knob to the lever. FWIW, for my '87 (built in January of 1987), it was the allen screw under the cap method. No crush sleeve. Pried off the cap (there are 3 prongs, with one at the 12 o'clock position), and then removed the 6 mm allen screw bolt.
