Replacing clutch - oil behind pilot bearing?

Hi all,

Changing the clutch on my '81 930 due to shudder. Removed the flywheel and pilot bearing. Crankshaft seal seems to have been replaced not too long ago. However, behind the pilot bearing it is 'oily'. Should it be this oily? Can't find it on the forum.

probably grease, the pilot bearing should be greased, some types will break down looking like oily residue.

looks like grease

if the seal was leaking you would have oil around the seal.

check the case seam below the seal. make sure that is sealant and not oil

Thanks. Case seam is dry, no oil... Flywheel is being resurfaced and new parts are on their way. Next week: putting things back together!

Always a good idea to replace the pilot bearing each time you do the clutch. Good preventative maintenance.
