Should I part my car?
It seems that may car my be too extreme and I haven't had any luck selling it, plenty of low ball offers but nothing realistic so I'm curious if I should part my car and sell engine/gear box and Haltech all together as one unit and sell the rolling chassis.
The engine made 736rwhp to the wheels and it has 700 miles since Bello build the engine, a few videos below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftE7qQzYDJs Complete Car https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh2f0JOAK8E |
I think it would be a shame to have to part out the car as it is a great looking and well developed package. On the other hand, if you can get the money out of it by parting it out, then so be it. Just make sure to get a firm commitment on both, before seperating them.
Good luck either way! |
I don’t think I would part it. How low are the offers from your asking price? Are you planning on getting another Porsche, just curious as maybe trading might be an option.
Thanks, Larry |
It would be a crying shame to part out your car, even though it will be worth more in parts.
Back in 2005, when I bought my car, there was a well-known member by the name Geoffery, he was/is from NY (anyone remember him??) who also had a highly modified '89 930, he tried for a year to sell it and had no takers, sadly he ended up parting out the car. He offered the car to me in the low $40s but I was already knee deep in my own. It saddened me that this was the ultimate fate of his car. Juan - what is the lowest number you will take for your car? I know lots of gearheads here in Houston and can spread the word. Yasin |
@Ollies930
That's one of my fears I end up with one-half of something and without a car @ljpviper After months following what's been sold out there, many with engines needing a rebuild, bad paint jobs, no documentation, and the list is endless. I had offers from $35K up to $75K lots of $70K. Because of the condition of my car and compared to others I think a fair price is $85k to $90K. Trades I'm not interested at this time. @slow&rusty I remember Geoffery's case, same happened to Bello's last car no takers ended up parting it out, it is a crime shame indeed $85K I feel is a fair price with a brand new motor with 740 miles on it and a TON of brand new parts |
Good luck Juan. The recent BAT sales on 930 have not been too strong. I know it's not the same car but it might be having an effect.

Crappy season to be looking for a serious buyer, then add rising interest rates and an economic slowdown. It would be a shame to dismantle such a nice project. Spring is typically a better time for summer rides (for many)…if you can gamble on ‘typical’.

just hang on to it Juan prices will come back

@DaytonaCoupe66, @Ken911
I'm not sure if the money is the driver rather than my car being considered a "Hot Rod"? |

Go take a look at how many blue chip Porsche are on bring a trailer and notice the prices. It’s a buyers market.
|
Is the car itself heavily modified? It looks relatively stock and very clean from an appearance standpoint.
Throw on a set of Fuchs, flat decklid, stock 3.2 and you'll probably get more and sell quicker than with the current drivetrain. Than you can sell the big motor separately. You have an extremely narrow market with such a high HP motor, IMO. |
Not many shops that the BAT Porsche buying crowd are familiar with are aware of who could maintain it, so that may be the problem.
Personally, I would prefer it to look like a street 934.5. A 934.5 look Turbo recently bid on BAT to $185K on 11/2. It was located in Miami that could be street used, so those bidders are most likely still looking. Maybe with similar fender extensions like that one for larger wheels & tires to make it look like the performer it is, might do the trick. With other cars the modded ones are now getting big $$$ so maybe Porsche buyers will catch up. Bat buyers pay up for cars that look fast so why not have the performance also? OR, give Mecum a chance when he is near you. Lots of car loving drivers in his buyer pool for modded to big HP. Also, might get one nearby that wants your expertise to help maintain it. Anyway, that is what I would do. |

Many on BAT are first time Porsche buyers. You and I, like Juan, are types that are not satisfied with a stock 911 as we realize Porsche always had plans for the 911 chassis for much more performance dating back to its beginnings. When they realize what could be attained even in the late 70s early 80s with the turbo advantages of the 930, some may evolve. And when they find out the cost and wait time of getting theirs done as most, like me, do not have the ability to do it themselves. Good luck with that. I'm just now upgrading my 85 930 that Norwood built in 2002 to similar spec to yours with the addition of extreme recast heads, GT2 evo cams, JE piston & liner upgrades, current Motec w coil on plug and exhaust sensors for each cylinder to safely handle the extra cylinder pressure. The redo cost plenty ( the new wiring harness, $$$$ ykes ) even tho we are reusing the Norwood intercooler, ITBs, turbos and exhaust system. I did not plan on redoing mine for resale so whoever wants similar performance will have to get in touch with Juan. |
How much were you asking for the car?

That motor would be pretty sweet in my car Juan, just sayin....

Fascinating answers and points of view! I never, ever had in mind to sell her but with times I have changed my mind, my boys are not car guys even that I purchased both two hot rods one with a VW GTI build and the other one with WRX STI, unfortunately the 911 won't go to any of them. This last build I build the car like I was going to keep it but knowing that for sure it was going to go for sale. Something build right without short cuts. To duplicate this car as mentioned it will cost a fortune as mentioned before. I don't think many of the Porsche lovers understand that you will not use all this power there's not enough road outhere to really utilize all 800hp unless you plan to race one mile races which I'm not lol actually at the low boost is plenty fun.

All the car info is here in case someone is chasing power it will give you an idea of what you will need

Juan, sorry to see you considering breaking the car. I agree with others that perhaps timing of the sale versus the economy just isn't working in your favor.
Still, there's a bum for every seat - and you only need one buyer, soooo.... I think the market is quite small for a high HP car to begin with. And I distinctly remember before my first round of upgrades saying "400HP in a light car should be enough for anyone, surely?" LOL. My impression is that non-HP Junkies look at CIS 930s with 450HP and consider them potential grenades (which they can be, if not done right). So first glance, a 3.2-based motor making 3 times original output gives them pause - as they don't realize that the platform is pretty darned stout, and with EFI, properly tuned, and potential issues addressed properly ahead of time - should be no real cause for concern. Also, "fresh rebuild" might be hurting you too - "why did you rebuild the motor, was it worn out?" might be what they're thinking. I had to read it a couple of times to figure that you went twin-plugged on the Xtreme heads, fitted Pauter rods & Haltech and did a bunch of "while we're in there". Top-spec work, for sure - but if the original top end wasn't trashed, it might help to clarify these were further/incremental improvements, rather than replacing prematurely worn-out parts after a few 10K miles of running in that spec? I gotta ask though - what boost levels do you typically run? I thought I'd seen you mention 25-40 PSI somewhere? My (inadvertent) forays into higher boost levels than I'd actually intended had no detonation at all, so I'm curious... And what gearsets do you run in that beast? My build is more for mid-range/response - and I find -01 gearsets very buzzy and kind of silly with the torque available. |
