Fuel injector delima and other projects

What's up other than boost pressure everyone,
So I have a few projects going on on my 86 right now.
My winter projects usually get started when the trees start getting leaves but hey its motivation to go hard and get things done.

I'm replacing my injector blocks right now with an aluminum set from Turbokraft (Thanks Chris!) and need to replace one fuel injector due to stripped threads.
I know i had another injector was leaking but unfortunately when I removed everything I didn't mark it.
I'm thinking about replacing all of them for good measure assuming they're original anyway but am considering just replacing the one and then and sending them all out to be cleaned and checked. Cis flowtech?

Another option is replacing the one and then after reassembly doing a flow test to see what happens
.
A big issue we all deal with is time.
Unfortunately my garbage is being stored at a good friend's house who is also a hotrod air head but lives 20 miles from me. I'm taking as many things home as possible to work on

I'm preparing to build a new secret lair for for the red head but we haven't broke ground yet.

Anyway my mistress and I have a commitment June 26th so everything must be done and tested by then.

As I get deeper in (hey oh!) more issues are being discovered so the scale is tipping further to more needs than wants.

We have to remember there is a budget involved so the more free the better but it must be done right.

The current project list is...

Install new Turbokraft injector blocks

Have intake hot tanked to clean out years of build up

Clean fuel lines (injector lines)

Clean engine compartment

Repaint fan shroud

Powder coat fan and housing

Repaint rear engine tin

New plugs

Install RSR rocker seals

Install turbokraft rocker locks ( Thanks Chris)

Adjust valves and install snap gap set

Install Ti RSR engine brace (Thanks Danny)

Install new timing chain covers (Bling Bling to match VC's)

New oil lines

We're going to do a short neck to long neck conversion ala the Houghton method for my Andial intercooler
Hack N slash baby

964 elbow and BOV

A few easy interior odds and ends
I probably missed a few things and know more will pop up as we dive deeper

Found.
Cracked header, well they've been on there since 2006 so not really surprising.
I'm going to buy another new set and replace

This will potentially lead to a few broken studs
I'll be as careful as possible, throw some juicy juice on them daily beforehand and then put a little fire to them and roll the dice.

This isn't my first rodeo so I'm going to go ahead and order the stomski tool to have it on hand

Split CV axle boots

Leaking rear shock, not surprising since they're original.

Stripped threads on fuel injector

Fuel Guage no longer accurate

I know there's a lot to chew on here but back to the main question.

What would you guys do about the fuel injector delima?

Buy one and then home test all after reassembly?

Buy one and then send them all out for cleaning and testing?
Remember this option adds cost and unknown lead time

Replace all 6 with new and roll out?

No one even tries to clean them (for a profit) anymore as I understand it. You can improve them by reverse flushing at home ala JFairman posted here somewhere. I bought six new ones to start my freshly rebuilt engine on a solid footing, and the idle has never been better. Of course everything was new so who knows how much the injectors were responsible for that. I had Tony in NJ put my old ones on his rig and he said the pattern was acceptable, but I wasn’t happy with that particular word choice I and sprang for the new ones.
If you want to save some $$ you’re welcome to my old ones. PM me.

The intake manifold is magnesium, so hot tanking in a traditional tank will dissolve it. Best to carefully clean with solvent and then a gentle soda blast to clean the outside ...
I have cleaned and tested a lot of CIS but injectors, and the new ones make a much better pattern. It's nice that there still available and not stupid expensive.

Reclino - Thank you for reminding me that the intake is magnesium. I'd hate to get back magnesium soup. I had it Powder coated years ago and it still looks good so soda blasting is out. I'll see what I can do.
The intake is port matched already and I thought about having it extrude honed just to smooth and clean it up a bit.

Gsxrken - Thanks for the offer on your injectors and the back flush method idea.
I have 6 new injectors along with some various gaskets simmering in my cart right now on our hosts site as I decide what to do.

I'm going to think about it for another day and see what happens.
I've tried a few times to upload a picture of my compensation piece since we all love pics but apparently I can't do it from my phone.

I took a lot of pictures of the tear down so maybe this weekend I'll upload everything from the computer to document the process for everyone.
Sorry, I didn't take pictures of my tears lol.

Great punch list Ben - your car deserves it and will reward you as such for those good efforts. Sound plan.

Agree w/ above, nothing like new injectors. Same as Kenster, my heap has nevvvvvvvver idled sooooo goooood with new injectors & rebuilt / ported fuel head (Flowtech - they did have a solid lead time to get done fwiw).

While waaaaay cool of Kenny to offer you his takeoffs - I'd hit submit on your order regardless and be done with it.

Keep us posted on your progress - great to see you back here dewd!

Hey Ben...so that's what you have been doing for the past year or so. Your 930 should run well once you're done refreshing it. Nice pic...you should post it up at 930potd thread.

Are you planning on any trips in your 930 this summer/fall?

Thanks man, I've been dormant too long but that doesn't mean I haven't been playing.

Finally got the car fixed after muuuccchh frustration around the end of August last year and got to play a bit before winter.

Moved homesteads in October to a new area 51 without a hanger so a generous friend has allowed my garbage to stay there and bring his property value down for a bit.

A new shed is in the planning stages so hopefully we can break ground soon and get her home.

I figured hey the cars running may as well take it all back apart but that's how the sickness goes.

Hello my name is Ben and I have a problem.

Yeah buddy I had to walk away from it for a while and think about the issues.

I have a good friend that's an air-cooled mad scientist as well and we tried so many things chasing the issue that I'll get into when I update the hesitation at 4000 rpm thread.

The real frustration was that we would tinker, take it around the block
Boooosstt yay it's fixed
Come back check things go back around
POP POP POP FUUUUUU**

In the end I learned a few new things so there's that.

If all goes well im planning on going out as much as possible and would like to meet up with some folks for sure.

If nothing else maybe you and I can meet up somewhere. I can probably drag out a few others from around here but you know how that goes. I know one other that's down for sure.

I have a better side shot of the ride that I've tried to upload a few times but the file is apparently too large.

Only time in my life that I've ever had that problem hey oh.

I'm doing everything from my phone so that's probably an issue.

I'll post the one that works for the time being i just didn't want to saturate posts with the same image when I have way better ones.

Soooo
I went ahead and pulled the trigger on just replacing all 6 injectors with new one's.

I'm communicating with Turbokraft Chris about his adapter pipe parts to do the IC long neck conversion.
I'm heavily considering going this route depending upon the difficulty involved.

Decisions Decisions.

Since I'm cleaning the intake and other induction parts I'm thinking that the IC should be cleaned internally as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions on cleaning an IC out?
Radiator shop or just soak her in a detergent hot bath?

Thoughts....

Did a quick search and read that folks used either gasoline or mineral spirits for cleaning out their intercooler.
I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Just a quick update..
I have 93.0000% of all the project parts needed in stock and ready to get my grubby little paws on.

After finishing lower motor tear down Saturday morning my plan is to make a nickel and dime parts run along with some tacos!

I'm thinking about laying out all of the pieces for a sexy photo shoot and reality check on how much work is ahead of us as the calendar ticks by.

Mission accepted!

Yes sir and thank you.
Off topic but going by your screen "handle" i can assume that you have or have had a Suzuki sport bike or 2.

In my younger days I had 5 different GSXR's from 750's to 1100's. I rode RM250 dirt bikes as well.

I always liked the Zuuk's over everything else.

Just a quick update on where I'm at with the project list.

So far everything has been stripped from the top of the motor.
The turbo and wg are off and I have pieces scattered from one county to another with much of it here at home so I can work off-site.

Progress isn't moving as fast as I'd hoped due to the logistics and time. I'm a vampire and work 3rd shift when my team of mad scientist work 1st shift.
I have 24 hour access and can go over anytime so on Saturdays I'm out there at 3am working until the others wake up.

Not having the home shop advantage is difficult when you can't just walk out to the secret hanger to spend some quality time with the the other lady.

So..... We all know that projects have a mind of their own so the further you get in the more you find
I like surprises but ......

The original plan was to strip everything off the motor that's in the way and do a partial motor drop.

I've watched a few videos of people installing the RSR rocker seals and I just don't think it's possible with the motor in the car.

People say they have done it but how in the F*** did they have room to slide a long extension in there to tap the rocker shafts out especially up at the firewall end?

How did they support the motor with it hanging halfway out and still be able to rotate the crank 10,000 times to get the rockers set up to the no pressure (valve adjustment clearance) setting?

I'd like to see it.

The videos I've watched the motor is on a stand and it's still not easy to do.

Soooo.... Now the plan adjustment is we're just going to pull the lump out and do it right.

I really didn't want to do this but I'm practically there now and only need to take off the clutch cable, ground strap, cv bolts, starter wires, shift rod coupler, speedo wire, and the 4 mount bolts.
I'm not sure about the swaybar yet but it probably needs to go as well.

The way I see it now is ,
we could either spend 2 days cussing, getting frustrated, throwing s*** and monkey f*** it only to realize it's not worth the anger and just drop it anyway.

Or..... I can get there early like always and spend an hour unhooking everything to have it ready to yank when my hooligans wake up.

I'm telling myself this is the right thing to do and it will ultimately be faster, Relatively easier, and more precise.

Deep breaths.......
Tell self it's going to get done....
Tell self it must be done....
Remind self that it's all worth it.....
The boost is calling....

I'm going to offer a parts sacrifice to the god of speed and thunder and ask for forgiveness.

There's an alternate plan to have it out tomorrow and not wait until the weekend.

Updates to follow later this week.

I have lots of photos of everything coming apart that may help others later.

I'll post them when it's done and i have more time.

Fellow boosters keep me in your thoughts when you're out there at 1 bar at the top of 3rd gear!

You did the right thing buying new injectors. Something you don't have to worry about again and can scratch of any troubleshooting list. Plus a nicer running car. I once spent a lot of time cleaning my injectors - reverse flushing them etc. Posted on this forum. But marginal gains methinks.
Yes - pull the engine - the sway bar has to come out. Just put mine back in. I would not like to do rocker arm seals with it in either. You get to check and clean everyting. Make a list before you pull it.
I did valve settings, gearbox oil, leakdown check etc - and FORGOT to check head torques. Much easier while out and doing the valves - but I forgot. Write a list.
Alan

Well here we are just about the middle of October and my garbage is still on 4 jack stands.
I absolutely Love my car but not right now.
I still need to post a progress report but it will take a weekend to do.

Let me start by saying that my redhead has fought us for every single inch and has aged me 10 years.

Every problem had a solution and every solution has had a problem.

I did not anticipate the 20 miles between the car and I would be such an issue but let me tell you it wears on you when you are having issues and you can't just walk outside to tinker.

I work 3rd shift which creates another issue due to schedule differences between my other mad scientist's and I when help is needed.
I have to stay up all night through following day so we can link up to work.

It was much easier when I was a younger scientist but now other life problems come up as in home maintenance, daily driver maintenance, relationship maintenance, etc.

I keep saying I'm going to update this thread with pictures including issues found (fought) with the solutions and i will when we get done.

This forum has been has been critical in the search for answers and it seems that the wealth of knowledge about these old beaters is infinite.

I thank everyone who has taken the time to post about their problems and everyone who has taken the time to answer.
I just hope this thread gives back in the end.

So....
We finally got the car to run for about 20 minutes last week but it's running so rich it'll burn your peepers out.
I have a lm1 but it won't read afr's hmmm.

We recalibrated it and nope.
We switched control boxes with another including the 02 sensor and nope. Error says that it's not getting enough voltage.
Nice...

Checked all connections and everything checks out but apparently the car has decided not to charge anymore.
I'm only getting 12.4 at the battery so most likely a new alternator will be needed.
Ironically I said that it'll probably need one for whatever reason and boom.

This will be the 4th one I've replaced if it comes to it.
I'll do all the usual checks as in cleaning grounds and positive connections and have the battery checked (2 year old Odyssey) #3 at batteries plus where i purchased it.

Next time we'll talk about diagnosing the fuel pumps not running and a pegged out boost gauge.

Helpful hint...it was the brown and white wire going into the 14 pin connector in the rear fuse panel.
It magically broke and it's really fun to repair.

Thanks again Pelicans for that link!!

That was 2 weeks worth of frustration and wasted time.

I Help! Fuel Pump Issues

I'm planning an attack for this weekend and will report back.

That's it for now.

We all feel your pain I am sure.
I have been to that dark place - when I first received my car off a boat. Couldn't start it. Called for my trailer (was expecting to drive it home - after all it was a freshly rebuilt engine ).
It took about 6 months and a couple of engine drops (maybe more) before I could do a few Kms down the road. Then the fun really started - no synchros, clutch clonking etc.
Honestly, I did wonder if I should part it out - but would I get my money back - extremely small market at the bottom of the world.
With the help of this forum and about another 12 mths of perserverance, I got there. Never looked back.
I owe this forum heaps and gained lots on the way.
My advice is to stick with it and work with the forum. You will get there - guarantee it. And yes, it is worth it. You are in too deep now.
Good luck.
Alan
PS I had a similar issue on my AFR and it turned out to be a ground on the unit. And yes the pegged boost gauge is a disconnect.

Thanks Alan,
There's no doubt that we'll conker all!
I'll check the ground for the Lm1 as I do have it hardwired in.
I have a Rennline lower dash so the cigarette lighter is gone.

The old saying "Ran when parked" hits the mark lol.
