965 Turbo Intercooler and ITB's Question

Can a 965 Intercooler be adapted to work with ITB's ?

David 03-31-2025 12:59 PM

I have no experience with it but sure seems less than ideal. If going with the expense and complexity of ITB's wouldn't you also want a customer intercooler to take advantage of them?

962 03-31-2025 04:16 PM

Hi, David : Thank-you for your input. I just really like the look of that particular intercooler, plus I already have a NOS 965 Alternator Fan Housing.
It's actually quite efficient (factory 964 Turbo intercooler struggles at 450whp, heat soaks at 470whp) 450whp = 529 Engine Horse Power .

A search for ITB's in this turbo forum turns up some interesting stuff including an intercooler that looks very similar to a 965. Not sure what a 965 intercooler sells for but I imagine it's enough to make a custom TurboKraft ITB intercooler not too much more.

Cool, Thank-you David !

Apologies if this was already tried in the pelican turbo court. I’m up with jet lagged so I’ve got to ask… what sort of car are you cool kids referring to as a ‘965’? The never produced Audi v8 car?

Normally I’d assume someone is calling the 964 turbo a 965 because it has 965 part numbers, but post #3 says the 965 intercooler is better than the one on the 964 turbo.

So what here was being called a 965?

Speedy Squirrel 04-05-2025 09:16 AM

965 was a Porsche project that was never produced. It is the production 964 turbo intercooler.

What’s different about the fan housing?
Is it just the mounting points for the inner cooler ?
Just curious. I run a 964 t I/C as well. By far my favorite that’s available for our cars but it sounds like you outgrew it with your power level.
As mentioned, they’re getting pretty hard to find.
I too think you’re better off fabricating it from scratch.
Either way we’d like to see the process pix.
Good luck

Hi, pkabush: I'm just gathering parts for my project.Yes 964 Turbo 3.6 (aka 965) Running a 95 3.6 and the larger fan is not as efficient as the smaller 965 or 993 Twin Turbo fan.
Plus + The Coolness factor!

Can it be adapted? Sure.
But is it practical?
The outlet angle is hardly ideal for an ITB setup. Are you willing to cut and weld it to suit?
How about all the additional ports you don't need -- weld them shut as well?
If so, you may consider a good used 964T intercooler that someone has already used on an EFI conversion and welded up ports etc. We have one sitting in our warehouse, available at a fair price (surely less than you can sell a good unmodified one for, so you'd end up money ahead).

If it's the overall shape that you're trying to keep, then we have a solution for that:

You could always coat one black to get a more OEM appearance:

Chris, Thank-you for your advice ! The intercooler is so rare, it probably is not wise to modify it. The full width intercoolers are so beautiful, my goal is to build a 3.6 version of the Rothsport engine you helped with. I have the Rothsport/Jenvy ITB's. Going with Motec 130. Full width intercooler is 4k.
How much should I budget for air horns and plenums?

We have everything in stock to reproduce that setup again.

That billet FWIC is more than $4k.
As configured with quick disconnect couplers in & out, billet mounts, etc. budget $5700.
Budget $4300 for the billet plenums with airhorns. These are ready for final fabrication, i.e. charge pipes from IC to plenums. With tapered inlet tubes (as shown in final photo), figure another $1,200 labor & materials.

That's a finalized setup ready to bolt atop your Rothsport/Jenvey ITBs.
Everything is designed for easy disassembly and service.
Pressure tested past 3bar.

A single BOV ($325) is adequate, though some prefer 2x for symmetry.

Question Chris, here is an image of my itb's. How do the airhorns bolt on?

Will they require an adapter?

Hi, Chris: I have some fun Inquiring minds turbo questions:

How much did that 993 Twin Turbo engine sell for ?

The Billet Noonan case, what crank did you go with for that build. I imagine Xtreme Cylinder Heads.

The air water cooler setup, how much horsepower will it support with that setup?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1744635886.jpg

Those look like they are made to take a 964/993 manifold?
Or are they for the GT3 manifold?

Either way, we can make a set of airhorns to mate up to them.

Thank-you, Chris: I was hoping you would say that !!!

The buyer and price are not public information.

We're doing more than one engine using a billet Noonan case.
There's a 76.4mm crankshaft in one, and an 80.4mm crank in another.

Which air:water -- the setup we did for the flat fan "modern 934" engine we built?
That was rated at >1,500hp, but in reality they're always limited by how much boost the engine can take, and the amount of radiator that can be fitted to cool down the intercooler's coolant. The system we built for that car developed over 650whp on 91-octane pump gas.

Oh, that is excellent ! Oh so GT3 and GT3RS cranks, Wow, Sweeet!
Yes, the modern 934 build.Thank-you for the info. 650 whp should be sufficient :)
1)Will that fit under a regular 911 deck lid ?
2)One more question regarding turbo engines:
To run for some longevity at 0.9 Boost,is a larger displacement engine, say going from 3.6 to 3.8 allow the engine to run with less effort. Does the larger displacement make it easier to attain higher HP/Torque numbers?
