reinstalling the original muffler - do I need the cat on an '87?

hey guys do you need the cat with the original muffler or a bypass is preferred? Pros and Cons ? Car is exempt from state inspections/emissions.
Anyone recognizes what aftermarket exhaust is currently on this '87 930?

If you're running the original muffler then you have two choices: install the cat, or install the bypass pipe, if for anything but to bridge the gap. Since emissions are not an issue, what I did years ago was to drop the cat and install the bypass "test" pipe in its place before upgrading to a B&B muffler.
After market exhaust like yours, they will not accommodate a cat or pipe, as shown in your picture....no room. We don't need no stinkin cats!
Your muffler is either a B&B or Borla.
