Turbo Conversion Questions

I have read the tsuter thread on adding a turbo to a 911 CIS motor and have decided to take the plunge.
I'm using a 930 j-pipe, 930 intercooler and a tsuter style dual exhaust to accommodate the wastegate.

Some questions I still need answers to:

1) Would a K26 be a viable turbo?
2) Is an extra fuel pump required?
3) What size was the factory 930 wastegate?

Megasquirt will be added later down the road.
Has anyone added DIS using a crank trigger?

Any help with this is GREATLY appreciated guys

K-26 make good boat anchors. Ancient technology. I started with a Euro 76. No intercooler. I added an intercooler and went to the K-27. Big improvement in lag. I later added headers, cams, etc etc mo better. I had my engine redone by Stephen at Imagine last spring and went with the K-27 highflow S. It screams. Boost is there from 2200 and you get one massive shove at 3800 that feels like an afterburner kicking in. You'll read it time and again give Stephen a call.

1. no, see Les. Also look at MB911 (Ben) is putting together
2. likely depending on where you start and where you want to end. Will need altered obviously with EFI.
3. don't run...too heavy and heat cycled (just opinion) most run Tial 46. There is a great thread alive on Rennlist right now about WG's.

MS DIS is a yes with mutliple different intake choices.

Arguably, K27 is just as big boat anchor as K26. It's just bigger. Depending on how much boost you want to run, K26 might or might not be a good choice.

It's a smaller turbo which will give you boost eralier on but it will also run out of steam earlier. I recon you should be able to take it up to around 250hp before it starts blowing hot air.

Can anyone suggest AR and trim specs ?
Keep in mind, this is a 1980 3.0 with the 9.3 CR.
I know i'm limited in the pounds of boost i can apply hence the intercooler, fuel enrichment and timing restrictions i have planned.

I've been told 5-6 # boost unless intercooled, then 8-9 # is possible. Can anyone confirm that information?

Unless you already have the parts, I'd look at Ben's (mb911's) kit . I'd consider some sort of an aftermarket intercooler as well, as stock 930 ICs are considered to be inefficient.

The boost numbers you cite are accurate. My 3.2 has been very happy w/ .5 bar (around 7psi) w/o intercooling.

I use a TO4E turbonetics T4 with 55Trim and .69 AR and it pulls like a freight train from 3000 to redline and beyond. this was on my 9.3-1 81 sc engine. I did pop the motor due to over boost but that was due to the WG signal hose melting on the HE so it was entirely my fault..

I am now going with 98mm JE 8-1 so I will be a bit lighter in CR and I also am using a variation of going-super-fast IC witha 46mm tial WG and Mega squirt V2.2 maybe upgarde that later. Also I switched to a 3.2 intake

Ben, clue me in on your kit please (looked at your www already).

Also, what amount of boost were you safely able to run on the 9.3CR?

mb911 11-18-2006 07:46 AM

I ran .4 bar safely with AFR of 11.5 I will see if I can find the link of my project and post it

Excellent reading Ben, very impressed with the fab work. Clean, simple and uncluttered.

What A/R are you reffering to, turbine side or compressor side?
I see many turbo manufacturers list both specs.

Again, I thank everyone for their help and input.
The 930 IC, I may discard and update.

How loud is the WG using an open dump tube like that?

mb911 11-19-2006 04:00 AM

AR is cold side (compressor) and the WG is not all that bad to be honest

Well, following the suggested known specs, I just aquired a Garrett TO4E unit with .60 A/R and 57 trim.
Maybe not the optimum turbo but, it's close and it's a true TO4, not a T3/T4 hybrid or some chinese whistler.

I intend to use the 930 IC at least to start with. Again, it may not be the best choice but most of the low boost setups I see use no IC at all.
The Garrett is more than capable of overcoming any pressure loss the IC contributes, IMHO.

Thoughts, opinions ???

mb911 11-20-2006 01:30 PM

good place to start!!!!!!

paslantnose 11-20-2006 01:34 PM

Ok, now to tackle what's needed for fuel supply.
Is a fuel pump upgrade required for the CIS ?
Ben, any scoop on the CIS bonnets ?

mb911 11-20-2006 02:04 PM

I needed 8 people to buy a set of boots at approx 400 for the set but no one wanted it so I did not have them made at this point
