What's a best core for the top mount intercoolers?
Bar & plate, or tube & fin? I've used bar & plate in front mount Japanese turbo's, but top mount IC's are different, due to the air flow characteristics at the rear of the engine ![]()

Bar & Plate Pros: More sizes available, better charge air flow, lower boost-pressure loss.
Tube & Fin Pros: Lighter, better cooling air flow, more efficient (due to increased turbulance) I think most of the custom intercoolers are bar & plate since plates can be stacked to build larger ones and they can be easily saw cut to make smaller ones. You can increase the efficiency of the bar & plate by using a larger core than required to slow the charge air so it has more time to cool. Of course that makes an already heavy intercooler that much heavier. Due to the location, I think tube & fin would work better. What do I have? Bar & plate.

LOL, I have a full bay bar & plate too... actually not that much heavier than my old tube & fin IC to be honest.

Yeh I know the ARE mob very well... he made my very first IC and I put Juan and Mike Rombotis onto them also... they do some very high quality tanks and have put a lot of R&D into the air flow characteristics in their tank designs. I'd definitely use them again and highly recommend them to anyone. They owner, Richard, is very knowledgable and helpful. Top guy!

Craig:
What kind of instrumentation did you use for this test? How is the temperature response time with this instrument? Thanks! Pat

Andial intercooler gauge - one right at inlet, one on collar into the intake manifold - both a permanent install .
Response is immediate & I verified the temps to be accurate beforehand
