Bootstrap new 930 owner
 

Hi all,

I just purchased a 1988 930 and would like a 4 hr. training demo on my car. I promise dinner at the Odyssey in Granada Hills after the session.

I just want an honest opinion on the car and a training session on all the controls etc.

Don't lift off the gas without the steering wheel pointing straight ahead and you will be fine :)

Smart move. Practical learning from a 930 vet is a very good idea.

Be carefull in the wet stuff until you've driven it a while..
Great cars and really fun to drive..I've got a 86 that people still sware its new. 80,000 on the clock and hardly ever had any issues yet

I still don't know how to use my AC / vent system. Fortunately the windows and sunroof work.

That would be worth adding to your syllabus...

Have fun. Oh, and change your oil religiously. Oh, and read Pelican and Rennlist religiously.

Welcome aboard. These are such great cars! I drive mine daily and wouldn't hesitate to dive it anywhere for that matter. I keep telling myself that one day I'll buy an el-cheapo-practical-utilitarian vehicle to use as daily transportation (read: Honda), but I truely feel naked without my 930. I think it's actually come define part of who I am...if a thing can do that. So I'll just keep racking up the miles and servicing it at regular intervals!

Tooling around town (off-boost) these things are very mild-mannered and easy to drive....step on the loud pedal and things can happen *VERY* quickly! Be careful until you've gotten the feel.

4/ Use high octane gas
5/ Learn to change your own oil (very easy)
6/ Don't do burn outs

You ought to try a tank of 105 octane race gas.... The car responds very nicely....

I would love to try a tank of high octane. I assume this feul will not harm the motor.

Don't do burnouts, Man these cars do great burnouts. Rev to 7k and pop the the clutch. Nice set of black ribbons down the road. I've only done that a couple of times, great fun.

burnouts?? my cars clutch slips if try something remotely like a hard start.. but doesn't slip any other time !! I heard they are not cars made to launch!

dont do it all the wieght is on the rear wheels ,its hard on the drivetrain unless you have tons of cash to fix. go buy american muscle car and light em up.

What is the highest octane pump gas you can buy in the US? Sunoco sells 94 Octane (10 % Ethanol I believe) up here. It is about .50 per gallon more than 87 Octane.

i would go ou tof my way for sunoco 94 ,i could feel a difference with that fuel. but they stopped selling it around us,was more expensive but worth it.

Mine used to slip, but not any more. Upgraded to HD pressure plate and done away with that crap rubber disc. Hooks up everytime without fail. That's how you get 0-100 -kmh in 5.0secs. lol.

I'll put that on my list of things to do when I drop my engine..

Can I just go get some racing fuel and add it to the 91 octane for a bit better performance? I was told that it helps to keep the car from detonating.....and the indy took a drive with me and said that he could hear a very slight detonation at WOT. I tried to listen and couldn't hear anything except a really great engine sound....but his suggestion was to get some racing fuel and add a gallon or two to the tank. How many gallons of racing fuel...and how many octane should the racing fuel be...how many gallons does someone add to a tank to bring it up to a better octane rating?

The basic issue seems to be one of AFr's at WOT.....he said they measured it and it ran great except for one little spot at WOT...then it only pinged one or two times. How dangerous or ultimately harmful is a periodic "ping"? My hearing is not that good so I can't hear the damn thing ping. Other than that, the car is stock and runs great...the PO shimmed the wastegate to .85 bar.

Average it out:
For example - 8 gals 92 + 2 gals of 110 = 95.6 octane
