I guess we need to re-check Garrett information. When talking about a turbochargers rotating assy you will have 4 diameters of the wheel that one needs to list and check.
For the GT35R 714568-1 turbocharger Compressor wheel Inducer diameter (the blades you see) mm? Compressor wheel Major diameter (largest diameter of wheel) mm? Turbine wheel Exducer diameter (blades you see) mm? Turbine wheel Major diameter (largest diameter of turbine) mm? Let's fill in the blanks.. |
This is all I have on the GT35R.
Turbine -Wheel: 68mm w/ 84 trim Compressor -Wheel: 82mm w/ 56 trim -Housing: .70 ar BTW, I'm not trying to start a HF vs 35R war here Zeroclearance. I'm just feeding back how pleased I am with the GT35R setup I have... I DID say I did the upgrde along WITH headers, so it's NOT a back-to-back comparison. At the end of the day, the goal is the same for everyone, whether it be better streetability or more HP for track performance. Whether that be with a KKK, Garrett, PTE or Turbonetics is up to the individual. Not trying to make negative connotations about any particular vendor SmileWavy No harm in wanting somethig different to the typical turbo crowd :) |
If I am calculating right, given those numbers, then the inducer on the compressor is 61.4mm - not largely different than 60mm.
Merv: What A/R do you have on the turbine? Just wondering. BTW: I am trying to decide if i am going GT35 or GT40 on those headers you sold me. Since it needs to blow into 3.8ltrs i am now leaning towards a GT4088R. |
The GT35R's that I have torn down and have measured have been 60.86mm, tip to tip. The tips are a little extended and Garrett has published a larger diameter. However, where I have measured is consistant with every wheel (in practice).

If you wish I have a K27HF that you can try. It worked nice with my GHL headers (which are also available). However, fuel enrichment is recommended because it blows to redline. I would keep it but I have a T04 flange on my headers and I may go to a bigger turbo. (BTW: i am going to be in the bay area in early march). |

A divided housing will increase spool-up but will increase back pressure. A .78 A/R housing is good for a 3.3 or 3.4ltr.. It's tight for a 3.8ltr. For a 3.8ltr I'd look at a larger turbine wheel.. The GT35R wheel is smaller than a K27-7200 turbine. When Porsche went to the 94 3.6 they went with the 7006 (turbine) which is 3/8" larger than the GT35R..

Agree with Kevin, for a blown 3.8L, go with a larger A/R, like 0.95A/R with the GT40R... it'd work well with those 1 5/8" headers I sold you a while go ;)

So it looks like a GT4088 with .95AR is in the works.
BTW:Kevin do you have anything that might match such? It would have to adapt to a T04 flange. Craig: This is a good post. I am awaiting your decision on the turbo. |
Mic, you could go with a Turbonetics or Precision solution too... don't rule out those turbos! Something like a PT70, P-Trim would be nice too :cool:

mic the rule of thumb is building a turbocharger for the amount of HP that you want to run, this is determined by the compressor wheel selection (very important) the turbine housing will be determined by your displacement.
