MAP-ECU2 Piggy Back Computer

What do you guys think of this new MAP-ECU2 piggy-back computer for the Motronics?

It allows full control of fuel and ignition using a map sensor for input and eliminates the BOSCH Air Flow Meter.

It also has some other useful features, which I probably would never use, but it's a much cheaper option than going with a full stand-alone EMS.

It even accepts input from Wideband O2 sensor/controller (e.g: LM-1 / LC-1), allowing you to tune for best A/F's!

I like the fact that you can tailor your ignition map according to various load conditions for best performance

Input/advice?

Personally, I think it is a pretty decent and inexpensive route to go. There are Supra guys running 800-900whp with the MAP ecu, so it definitely works. IMO though, the Greddy E-Manage Ultimate is the best piggyback type device like this on the market. Both of these units basically perform a large majority of things that a standalone would. Not to mention, the hardware of both of these units (cpu's, circuitry, etc) is superior compared to the relatively old 3.2 Carrera Motronic. There's really no way you could go wrong, as long as you know how to tune or know a good tuner. Unfortunately things like MAP and MAF conversions for Porsches tend to be very expensive. In all honesty, units like the Greddy E-manage Ultimate are probably more advanced then any of the map/maf conversions out there for our cars, not to mention it's cheaper. As technology advances, things tend to become cheaper so there really is no need to pay $2-3k for maf/map conversions any more. True, a large part of what you pay for is the tuning and knowledge behind making these things work. Though, we're not in the 80's anymore! ;) With all of the info on the internet, the vast amount of competant tuners out there, etc there are now plenty of viable and inexpensive options like these piggyback units. Hanging out with the import crowd much of the time, I've seen how well piggybacks can work and how effective they can be.

I agree... it's a very cost-effective option.

The older revision of the MAP-ECU did not have ignition control/tunability, however, this new version does it all and at a fairly cheap price too! The Supra guys love these types of piggy backs.

The thing I'm not so sure about with the Greddy E-Manage is that it does not allow you to remove the Air Flow Meter once it's configured and tuned.

The MAP-ECU2 on the other hand, allows you to run in a MAP/speed-density configuration, totally eliminating that restrictive flapper box AFM in the intake tract.

I was considering an Autronic or Protomotive standalone ECU, but at USD$3k installed, I just can't afford it to be honest

This comes out, after i took out the motronics.

Dta Pro 8 here I come.

Tony, did you have the MAP-ECU or MAP-ECU2? The earlier one didn't have ignition control, only fuel

Wydryd, the E-manage Ultimate is the only e-manage version which DOES allow you to eliminate the afm with an optional map sensor. The older E-Manage "Blue" version did not have this feature. The MAP ecu might be a better idea though since they are in Australia (I believe, maybe it's NZ, I forget) so there might be a lot more local support.

They are actually in NZ, but I should be able to find someone local who will tune the thing for me. I can install and wire it into the factory loom... I just need someone to tune the thing

My motor will be twin plugged soon, so it'd be nice to have this installed and ready for the tuning when the twin dizzy and extra plugs are connected up

I had the map-ecu(never installed it), but I wanted to control timing, wasted spark, and other features. I jumped the gun and went w/ a standalone, something I should of done long time ago.

How's it running now with the DTA?

YermanCars 02-04-2007 04:10 PM

I am working on It as we speak, Hopefully we can put do some good power.

WydRyd 02-04-2007 04:18 PM

No doubt you will :D

At a guesstimate, I'd say an extra 10-15% up top at the same boost level ;)

Keep us posted.
