Type/Grade oil recommendation needed
 
Can anyone tell me what grade of engine oil I should use a 88 Turbo. It has 64K miles and is a 3.3L H6. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use to run Castrol 20W-50 (dino) in mine, but have since switched to Mobil Delvac 15W-40 (also dino). I also used Shell Rotella "T" 15w-40 with good results. Be prepared as you'll get a lot of different answers on the "oil debate".

I'd always used Castrol. After a recent rebuild since there were no leaks I went to Mobil 1 5-50. The car runs 20-30F cooler than ever before. This is on a relatively modded 76 turbo.

15/50 M1 here also. But it had M1 since the rebuild, so no leaks.

Jake, did you know the M1 in a car that has seen only non synthetic can more often than not spring some leaks?

I disagree. I have switched over 12 cars that I have owned from mineral to Mobil 1, and I have never ever experienced leaks from the switch: Toyota Land Cruiser, Volvo's, BMW's, Jeep GC's, 3 911's, 1 930, even my Range Rover!. I am not saying it doesn't occur, I've just never seen it. The mileage of these cars at the time of the switch ranged from 10k to 120k. I switched the Range Rover at 70k, and it now has 165k no additonal or increase in the existing leaks!!

I've rebuilt engines, ran them on mineral for 10k then switched, no leaks.

I'm sure it happens, but if it were more often than not, I think I would have experienced it, as I have done this in a variety of cars since 1987.

Interestingly, Mobil and Amsoil are two of the few oils left that put zinc in their oil, which is totally vital in Porsche air cooled engines. In fact, they have almost identical amounts. Amsoil is as good as any oil, but I still go with what Porsche uses internally.

If Mobil gets rid of their zinc levels, I will likely switch to Amsoil, if they still use the zinc. Or Redline or Royal Purple, if they still use zinc.

I did just look into getting octane boost for hot summer days, and Amsoil has a product which works better than most in some reviews I found, it's worth about 2.25 octane points, so I think I'll try that this summer. Easier than mixing toulene, I think.

No, I just saw that they run the same zinc levels as Mobil 1.

I personally have no experience with Amsoil but have heard only positive things about them. If you change the oil after 3,000 miles, I would think Amsoil is just fine.

It is a well-known issue with 911/930 engines, TimC.

It is a well-known issue with 911/930 engines, TimC.

Craig, I've heard it, but in 20yrs of playing with these cars, and working on friends 911's, which included many conversions over to Mobil 1, I've never experienced this. Maybe I've just been lucky....

Castrol Syntec Blend 20-50W, changed every 4K or 6 months whichever comes first.

I just ordered Amsoil Series 2000 SAE 20W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil. They say that you can extend 3x manufacturer's recommended intervals, although right now I'd never do that, no technical reason just uncomfortable. I talked to their technical dept, told them it was for a 930, mentioned the air/oil cooled engine and turbo as opposed to water cooled, and it did not seem to matter. I'd really like to know how they base their intervals...I'll get it analyzed after 3k and possibly go 5k.

Please change your oil after 3,000 miles. I am asking you nicely.

I don't care if they say you can go to the moon and back.

Your oil might not break down structurally at the microscopic level, but it will still get DIRTY after 3,000 miles. It is not the oil itself which is a concern, it is all the CRAP that will end up in your oil from burning gas through your engine. Twice as much if you have a turbo.
