WA state anti-motorsports legislation

This isn't exactly specific to auto motorsports, but it is only a short step away to applying the same faulty logic to lapping days, DEs and the like.

Those of you from WA please write to your elected officials to make your opinion be known. It could be one day soon that there will be no more track fun with this kind of leadership.

Why? Under what law would they be doing away with LEGALLY sanctioned events? Im sick of it! They are doing simaler things here in CT by not allowing a track in the New Haven area. If you want to legally beat your car here it means taking a full day trip to Lime Rock for most people it is on the other side of the state. When I was 16 a group of friends and some lawyers and some other big names tried to get a drag strip in this area. The people we talked to said they would look into it and now I am 21 and there is still not even talk of a track.
Oh well- those 180+ blasts down Rt-15 gets my jollies off just fine.

These are probably the same goons that trashed NASCAR last week. NASCAR has been pushing to build a track in the Seattle area.

I'm sure it's a pretty common sentiment in our state congressional houses. It's no secret that we're populated by individuals that consider themselves to be progressive, and the internal combustion engine doesn't fit with that philosophy. Witness the current absurd debate over our waterfront viaduct. There are several proposals that are actually gaining credibility that will reduce capacity, which is simply insanity. Not to diverge from the original subject too far, please take a couple of minutes if you're a washington state resident and write your elected officials to express your opinion. I have done it several times in the past, and received thoughtful replies each time to my ongoing surprise. Unlike the idiotic, rude and juvenille response from state senator Adam Klinen to the guy in the link. What an ass.

Oh my ... That boils my stones in there resting place!
That piece of garbage is probley mad that he has one foot in the grave and no lead left in his pencil! Forget juvenile, that is downright unprofessional and if I lived any where near him I would ride a wheelie right through the front door of his house on my KX 250 , do a few donuts in his living room and than piece back out on one wheel- then take a on his car. Would he rather those "drunk, spoiled rich kids" be having fun on motorized forms of recreation or doing drugs and robbing him crack money? I cannot believe someone in his position would say such wrong things.
I feel bad for you guys that live there and only hope that you petrify him more.

I like this part of Kline's response: "But why, why, why, do folks insist on motorized "sports"? Those two words are an oxymoron. There is nothing sporting--athletic, physically demanding--about riding any machine anywhere."

Obviously he's never riden off road or driven a race car. What a dumbass.

I like the part where he talks about "solitude and self exploration". Whats that? A chance to be by yourself to find your thing? I dont think that this bill will get passed provided people actually speak up.
Randy- Could I speak up on that link or is that in state residence only?

I don't see why not. Maybe an email message to Sen Kline, letting him know that people from as far away as Connecticut think he's an idiot would be worth the effort too. I say "pile on".

Like Randy said, this kind of legislation can and does easily extend to other areas - such as our road courses we use for DEs and track days. I was fairly active in helping a local track with some initial problems they encountered. The negative momentum was astounding in it's ferocity.

A nearby track is having a hell of a time improving noise levels by reconfiguring drag strip layouts, installing fences, and improving facilities.
The genius local homeowners - whose houses were ALL built after the track was built in the late 1950s, and who are "backed" by overzealous bureaucrats - decide that "no change" is better than any possible improvements.

Once momentum is gained in one area......a group can be screwed by the snowballing BS that ensues, and quite frankly engulfs the enthusiasts. NIMBY is typically a reply borne by reaction instead of learning what the hell a project truly ensues.

Kline sez:
"But why, why, why, do folks insist on motorized "sports"? Those two words are an oxymoron. There is nothing sporting--athletic, physically demanding--about riding any machine anywhere."

He needs to get in a car and work his ass off for an entire trackday, then let's see how chipper and passive he feels at 4:00 pm...

I just heard today, that Washington state is also looking to pass a bill that bans "Boo-ing" at High School athletic events, because it is unsportsmanlike.

What in the world are you guys feeding your politicians out there???

(ours here aren't any better really, they are utterly stupid. I'm convinced that the closure of many of the nation's Sanitariums is what has gotten us where we are today... because most of the politicians should be patients in them, instead they are roaming government halls)

We have a slew of people who are party to a political organization that does not back motorsports.

'Noise' and any perception of 'disturbing the peace' or 'harming the environment' means you are automatically screwed to begin with.....and must fight to get out of that political hole.

Guys....You all sound so conservative...Dont you all know that "Progressives" the neo word for socialists, totalitarians and wack job environazis. You should listen to the blenderheaded commy politicians in California. Thats nothing....There have been after the Glamisoids for years stating that riding a sand dune is an ecological disaster. We desparately need a political purge....Dont say that to loud because it will become a hate crime...I'm sorry Washington that the disease has pread that far north....

I drive a fire engine on capitol hill in Seattle, the San Francisco of the north, so I'm pretty used to the insanity that passes as progressive thinking. It's flat mind boggling sometimes, and frustrating at times. My favorite is those who espouse tolerance the most, refuse to see or acknowledge the hypocrisy in their lack of same towards any viewpoints not in agreement with theirs.

This could easily turn into a rant from me that would overwhelm this site, so I'll just ask that any of you so inclined, please send the Senator a note letting him know that his self absorbed and self righteous view of the world is not necessarily the majority view.

Thanks.

I don't know how much weight a bunch of angry letters from non-constituents will do (though it couldn't hurt, either). So I posted your link on a motorcycle forum based in the PNW.

The senator's proposed bill is aimed at dirt bikes. But the way it's worded could also include racetrack usage, which is also an off-road activity. So trackdays for motorcycles could be outlawed. Don't think that trackdays for cars wouldn't be far behind. Actually, the only little loophole in the whole deal (that I could find) is that the proposed law would apply to off-road vehicles only. So, presumably, as long as I had a street-registered vehicle (moto or bike), this law would not apply to me even if I used my vehicle in an off-road application.

And FINALLY a reasonable article on this subject:

Craig- I feel bad for all of you living there. Hopefully senators like Kline have bad heart conditions and will expire soon before b.s bills like that one get passed.
