930 with blown engine idea

Guys.... I have been looking for a 84-85 M-491 optioned carrera coupe in silver, blue, white...well really anything except red and black and it's been tough to say the least. Why you might ask? because I want long term reliability with min cost. Ok I am a cheap bastard. Soooo since I see many many turbo's for sale in various states, has anyone thought about buying a primo 930 with a blown engine and putting in a stock or maybe slightly pumped 3.2? Is this just whacked or is it possible to find a nice body interrior turbo cheap enough to where you could build up a nice 3.2 and put it in there? Next question is where do you find them?

Any comments even negitive are welcome.

I can't imagine why you would want to do that. The 4spd is completely wrong for a weak 3.2L engine, the resale value is gone, you give up power, the car becomes labeled as a poser, etc.
I don't see the M491 cars as desirable unless you wish to turbocharge the 3.2L engine.
My opinion. Other may vary.

A nice 3.2.... with twin garrets and fuel injection. This setup would be fun and could be built up to generate 400-450 horse and be under-strained while being reliable.

I was looking for an M491 as a basis for a track car (was going to drop a 3.6L into it) when I stumbled on/over my 930. I understand the logic, an M491 will not come cheap but to convert a 930 to a NA car with a G50 is going to run you a good $15K if you do a lot yourself.. and as Rarly said, the 4 speed is useless as-is with a NA engine.

Few things come to mind.

A "premo" 930 (9/10 condition) with a bad engine typically gets repaired or has a donor engine installed before being sold under distress. Roller 930's, though not uncommon, are somewhat infrequent. Probably end up shopping cross country and have to rely on the sellers opinion of condition. It seems common on Pelican to hear people speak of advertised rollers as being ideal track candidates due to deteriorated body condition.

Can you confirm that M491 was an option during Carrera production and not just SC production. (I'm not literate with production options/ dates).

How about a M491 fender conversion to a "premo" Carrera. There are plenty 930 parts floating around, but it might be budget breaking with autobody cost, not sure.

I doubt if you would save any money doing this. Putting a motronic 3.2 engine into a K-jetronic car is alot of effort.
