How Many Miles Before An Engine Rebuilt?

I know that's a tough question but I wanted to see how many miles you guys got out of your stock 930 engine before you needed a rebuilt.

139,000 and counting... never opened up.

I am religious on the oil changes, running stock (.8 bar) boost, and the mixture is on the rich side. My normal oil temps are about 180 or so (nice and cool). I drive hard, but only on a warm engine.

I don't plan a re-build for at least another 25,000 miles (in my case that will be nearly a decade!) if compression drops...

Mine was well over 150K based on the PO (the speedometer had been replaced and he thought it was ~180K) when I started fixing oil leaks and did a leakdown test after the motor was pulled. One cylinder was ~20% on the exhaust side and all else was 5-6%, so I decided to do everything. To my suprise, the main bearings had basically zero wear (they mic'd in spec, and the inside of the motor looked new), and it's possible (although stupid IMO) that 1 valve guide would have 'bought' this motor another 100K. Anyway, it should be good for another 20 years now....

Mine had about 38,000 when I decided to pull it for the rebuild. The oil leaks, from lack of highway time, were just too much. Nearly all the seals and gaskets were ruined. Once I got it into my engine stand, a bad case of "while you're in there-itis" took over. But I plan to keep the car for a long while and it's my daily driver, so I wanted a solid engine that would go the distance.

Thanks guys... I'm very impressed with the miles you first two guys got on your engines.

The one I'm looking at is an 86 930 with 62K miles and the owner has taking great care of this car. I'm having a PPI done on Wednesday and will know that day if I'll be the happy owner.

The funny thing is I don't even have the car yet and I'm looking to get the GHL exhaust with the 4" tip and the Schnell bypass pipe. I also think I'm going to run the Cup 1 wheels too.

Mine has done so well because it was driven often (an eleven-year daily driver for the guy who owned it before me!). He ran it often, and maintained it well. I bought it with 119K on the clock and have never really worried about the miles.

Personally, I wouldn't be a bit concerned with 62K on the clock if the car was maintained properly.

I think I'll be OK. Just by the way it looks and the way he took care of it. He also has all the records starting with 15K miles.

Suppose it depends on how hard you drive it :D

A few pictures of the beast... Oh and I want to add H4 lights too.
