Adding A Performance Cooling Fan?
Yesterday while stuck on the interstate due to an accident for 30 minutes or so I could see the temperature start to climb. So it made me think, can I add a performance cooling fan under the deck lid? Say where the opening is for the intercooloer?
A fan like this one, I could wire it so when I start the engine it would always run. http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sel...3/1014CU-1.jpg |

Does anyone make a fan kit that will fit in front of the factory oil cooler?

Check.....
Elephant Racing....they have a high speed fan for the cooler......Call them, they are very helpful.
I was just reading your post on Rennlist, and I also noticed your car 86 930. I am in the same boat as you likely. I have the brass cooler in the wheel well, no fan......and I have the same issue. I am not pushing Elephant's stuff, but that was my choice, as my motor is mint, and the number one enemy of the motor is excessive heat. I purchased the finned oil lines, widemouth cooler, and high speed fan, with an adjustable thermostat. You have a few good replies on Rennlist too, with suggestions for other fans. I don't think adding a fan to the brass cooler will give you what you want though....you need a Carrera cooler, and a fan. cheers, Mark |
I installed their high speed fan. So far, my experience is that it only prolongs the temp from climbing, which is actually an improvement, but I was wishing for stable temps...

What cooler are you running......brass row, or Carrera?
|
What ever is factory for the 86 930. I hope you are going to tell me that is my prob, because I sure would like to resolve this!
Nape, I was just reading you addition to the post above. I guess I have the brass cooler, and thay may be my problem. What is the difference in the Carrera and the brass? |
The Brass cooler....
is just 28 tubes running up and down, with no cooling fins on them at all....the Carrera cooler is a full radiator type cooler, with cooling fins, etc....and I believe is more efficient at getting the job done.
I believe that the turbo was reintroduced in 87 to the USA, and came with the Carrera cooler, not the brass one as we have..... |
The turbo was brought back in the US in 86. 1987 they added the Carrera cooling fan to the oil cooler. After taking another look at mine, I really don't see any difference between my cooler and the Carrera cooler. I do have the cooling fins, and it looks just like a standard radiator.

This is the better one of the two, you can also see the fan. |
That looks identical to mine. I also have the foam around the outside for extra sealing from the factory(31) and the finned cover/stone guard (32).

Sorry to hear that Tim.....
I figured the Carrera cooler and fan would do the trick.....esp in stop and go traffic...

adding a SPAHL Fan
In another thread on Rennlist I commented adding a 6" diameter SPAHL fan to the cooler pictured ed above in the PET. Mine was an 86 as well, yet the fender cooler I had (same as the PET) benefited greatly by having the fan attached to it. My temps never go over the middle bar, even in stopped traffic and 92oF heat.
I believe there was technical article here on this Pelican site that gives you the step-by-step of the install. I had a few thermostatic switches left over from a similar install I made on my 53 TD and used that to launch the fan (185oF). Anyway, that article gives you the electrical hook-ups to make it either thermostatically 'turn-on' or manually with a switch on your dash you can toggle whenever you get nervous about the temperatures. |
I use two 6" fans with a 100º themo switch like this.

I never think of the first white bar and the last red bar as any place to be running an engine at, but here's a retouched (red line) photo of where mine normal runs at. heavy stop, go and alot more stop would result in straight across which I believe is a hair below the slight white notch for 100oC http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185900159.jpg

Oh- I'm sorry TimC... the middle WHITE bar...
|
Gino - I have my fan set to come on, I'm guessing 210-220. In traffic I'll get almost halfway between the second and third white mark. I wanted to set it high enough so it would not come on when driving at speed. But I am wondering if I should set it to come on lower. I think also I just need to get a gauge with numbers so I can be more specific as to when it comes on, and what temps I actually run at.
Yours running at middle white mark, that's great. |
TimC-
I will adjust that to add what happened yesterday... drove from Merrimack, NH to Bennington, VT. It was 2pm and 87oF. That ride puts me over the White and Green mountains and is approx 170 miles. The temp gauge was on the middle white line for all but the mountain climbing and passing (a LOT of that!!) which also was on boost. Ending up in Bennington with the needle just under horizontal, or around 200oF. |
In the picture above, the face on the right has a small line at 9 oclock. That's 212* to calibrate the gauge.
Summit has the cheapest 6-7'' fan. It's 1/2 the price of Elephant Racings. I did buy my spare oil cooler there as the price was best. |
